THE AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.
[By
Atlas.]
I think that I am justified in congratulating the Avondale Jockey Club on the public spirit evinced by altering the date of the Autumn Meeting. The Club had a right to March 17, but by adhering to that date they interfered, in a measure, with the fixtures at South Auckland, Te Aroha, and Ohinemuri, and by postponing their own meeting to April 12 and 22 they were conferring a favor on owners, which I am sure will be appreciated; and if the clerk of the weather is only favourable lam sure the gathering, which commences on Wednesday next, will be a big success. Since the gates were last open to the public at Avondale improvements have been effected.that are sure to be appreciated. The unoccupied land at the rear of the grandstand has been converted into a very nice saddling paddock, and 28 excellent stalls have been constructed. This was a want that was badly felt, and to defray the expense of these constructions a nominal charge will be made. Those requiring stalls should lose no time in applying to the secretary for their use. I would further draw the attention of investors on the totalisator to an advertisement which appears elsewhere. They are advised that to avoid confusion money for investment should be to hand the day before the meeting. Telegrams sent on the days of racing should be addressed to Avor dale, but if sent on days before the racing they should be addressed to Auckland. The various events on the first day have filled well, but as the arceptances are not due until to-morrow night I am at a disadvantage in picking the winners. However, here goes: — Avondale Handicap.
