THE AUCKLAND LADIES’ BENEVOLENT SOCIETY’S CARNIVAL

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next the Exhibition buildings will be under the sway of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society. The carnival promises to be a big success. On the Wednesday there 2will be a procession of florally decorated bicycles, go carts, perambulators, goat and dogcarts—the latter for dogs really, and not for bigger quadrupeds. A great attraction will be Captain Lorraine’s balloon ascent and subsequent descent in his parachute. This appearance will be the last that Captain Lorraine will make during his present visit to Auckland. In the evening there will be bicycle races on the sports track, under the direction of the Auckland Cycling ■Club, a promenade concert, tableaux vivants, and ventriloquism. On Thursday there will be a grand fancy dress, and powder-and-patch ball in Nos. 1 and 2 courts. A very strong body of stewards has been formed for the ball, including all the leading influential men in Auckland, so this affair of powder and patches should be an unqualified success, lhe fruit show and cooking competitions —full particulars of which appear in the advertising portion of the Review —are arousing much interest. All the articles sent in for these competitions are to be given to the ball committee. Amongst the prizes for the cooking pompetitions is a gas stove given by the Gas Company for the most successful entries cooked by gas. Though the ball is announced as a fancy dress function, ladies and gentlemen in evening dress will not be barred, but it is hoped that as many as possible will array themselves in fancy cos • tumes, and thus help towards the picturesque effect of the gathering. Ball tickets can be obtained at or at Wildman and Lj ell’s. The arrangements for the carnival have been carried out efficiently by a strong committee, who have an energetic secretary in Miss Goodall.
