OTAGO.
The late Canterbury meeting—Local bookmakers losers — The Taieri meeting—The Winton meeting — Horses wanted. Dunedin, November 15. After the excitement of last week matters are very quiet in Dunedin. Most of our contingent have returned, the remainder being due to night, with the exception of H. Goodman, who proceeds to Wellington with his horses, Black and Red and Pitch and Toss. The meeting, taken throughout, was not a good one for our local bookmakers, Tirant d’Eau being the next heaviest backed horse m the race to Boreas, and on the straight out business on the day backers would have nothing but the winner. The Dunedin representatives that scored a victory were all well supported here, and our stables must be congratulated on having proved so formidable. H. Goodman had a real good win over both 8* ordfish aud Black and Red, especially in the latter case. Fulmen proved himself a good horse by his Cup second. The Taieri Meeting was the attraction in this district on Prince of Wales’ Birthday, but the going was very heavy. The day, however, was fine overhead, and there was a good attendance, over £l9OO going through the machine. Miss O’Kane won the Trial Stakes, Abercrombie being second, the latter evidently leaving his run too late. The Taieri Cup was won by Off Chance, who was favorite. Irish Girl annexed the Stewards’ Welter, and Tiger Lily (full-brother to Blazer) the Flying Handicap. Silverstream won the Selling Race, and Prophet secured the double in the two trots.
The Winton Jockey Club held their meeting of two days on November 9 and 10, when over £5OOO was put through the totalisator, which is a tecord for South. A Dunedin horse, Decoy, won the Winton Cup, most of the other races being won by district horses. Outram won the Hurdles on the first day, and Invader the second.
Two or three good weight-carrying third-raters are badly required this way, and a lot of money could be made with them, as there is a great lot of country racing to come forward shortly in Otago and Southland. Emmeline has foaled a filly to Gipsy Grand, and is to visit him again. Our new course will be ready in good time for Boxing Day.
