LOWN COBBESPONDENTS.j HAWKES BAY. Return of St. Mark—Local punters — Little Billie — Cartouche — Orizaba —Mitra—Raid on shops— The Fred Stowe fund—The Coursing scandal. Napieb, November 15. St. Mark returned from Auckland by the Flora yesterday. His failure to score in the Northern capital cost backers here a few pounds, for no matter where local horses go to compete or what talent they are opposed to the loyalty of Napier punters is proverbial and they put it down in favour of a local prad. The New Zealand Cup meeting was good all round for resident supporters as Tirant d’Eau, Douglas, Daunt, Hussar, and Jabber were all victorious. They certainly failed in some of their essays, but the fair dividends paid by them in their triumphs amply compensated their followers for the non-successes.
Little Billie was sent over the hurdles at Napier Park the other day, Waterfall’s brilliant and dashing offspring jumping the obstacles in a very proficient manner. When the fact is taken into consideration that it was his first go over the sticks he should turn out an adept at the game. He will keep some of his opponents busy as, he has got a turn of toe that very few hurdlers in this bright land of ours are possessed of. Cartouche, one of Mr Gollan’s brood mares has brought forth a filly to Captain Webb.Orizaba’s defection from the Waipawa gathering was caused through his having struck himself while working a few mornings previous to the meeting. A slight blister has been applied to the afflicted member, and that and a slight rest it is expected will remove the trouble. Mr Platt has had his two-year-old Mitra gelded, and Mr W. Bennett has done likewise with Te Oreore, the Wonderland —Kie Kie horse. One day last week the police raided a couple of alleged Napier tote shops, but their efforts to gain evidence against the suspects were futile. Their descents were simultaneous in both of the establishments. Fountain Lunn, who has charge of the thoroughbred stock at Mr Gollan’s station, collected £6 odd from the employees of that establishment towards the fund for the relief of Fred Stowe, who took his departure for the Hot Lakes one day last week. To-day Mr W. Gray, secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Plumpton Coursing Club, laid a criminal information against T. Troy, nominator of the “rung-in” Whaipiro, who won the Ladies’ Bracelet at the last meeting of the above Club.
