HAWKES BAY.
Another loss by Captain Russell—Work on Mr G. P. Donnelly’s private track — The Waipawa meeting — Torping — Melinite. Napier, December 24. Rasulka (by Vasco de Gama from Lorelei, by Leolinus —Naiad) and Blaze (by Terenga from a Bishop mare called Gipsy), who last season visited Cceur de Lion, have both foaled to the Dreadnought colt. A chestnut colt was thrown by Rasulka, but unfortunately last week it met its death, being kicked by a cow and succumbed to the injuries received, which is very hard luck for her owner, Captain Russell, who in the matter of losses in the bloodstock line has bad much more than his share of misfortune lately. Blaze’s production is a nice bay filly. Daniel O’Rourke is being worked in conjunction with Douglas and Golden Plover at Mr G. P. Donnelly’s private track at Crissoge, the trio being under the care of J. Atkins. Wehikore (by Dreadnought—Pursestring), the property of the same gentleman, is serving mares at Waimarama, a station property of Mr Donnelly’s on the Coast, and over a score of mares have paid their respects to him. A committe meeting of the Waipawa County Racing Club was held at Waipawa on Monday evening. Present —Messrs W. White (chairman), Buttes, Nash, Whittington, W; H. Rathbone, and T. Ireland. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Arron, Bridge, Harker, and Moat. Mr Loughnan forwarded draft of lease of new course. It was decided not to grant travelling jockeys free passes, but should they obtain mounts at the meeting the amount paid by them for admission would be refunded. The question of the removal of the Grandstand and other buildings from the present course to the new one was left over till the next meeting; December 28. Torping, the full brother to Brennan, who was purchased by his breeder (Mr H. Douglas) at the disposal of Mr Moeller’s stud last season, has been bought by George Hope from the Te Mahanga breeder. A horse of his stamp ought, in the pro-
ficient hands of Hope —should it so be desired — make a good hurdle and cross-country performer. Melinite, the more than half-sister to Industry (dam of The Grafter and Gaulus), has been bought for the breeding business by Mr Douglas. With a suitable consort she ought to produce something a good way removed from the ordinary.
