WELLINGTON.

Steel King—Wet weather—Tattersall’s sweep—The death of Mr G. Slater—A returned sportsman. Wellington, December 28. Steel King, who is spelling at Levin, will be brought down to Porirua after the Palmerston meeting, and Prosser hopes to be able to get him ready for the Foxton meeting. Wet weather this morning deterred many intending excursionists from visiting Palmerston and Martinborough. A local sport has drawn Longford, one of Mr Humphrey Oxenham’s team, in Tattersall’s sweep on the Carrington Stakes. Mr J. E. Henry asks me to contradict the statement, which first appeared in a Masterton paper, that he had donated £lO to the Masterton Racing Club. The feeling reference to the death of the late George Slater in the Sporting Review will be well read by his many friends. Jerry O’Driscoll, the well-known Hawera sport, returned from his trip to England last week.
