HAWKES BAY.

Rainbow —Yearlings — Track Notes —The WaApukurau Racing Club —Death of Le nor a—Captain Russel’s bad tuck — Training notes — Tally-Ho- The approaching steeplechase meeting — The Town and Suburban course. Napier, April 23. In consequence of Rainbow having knocked one of his hind legs badly his contemplated trip to Auckland has had to be abandoned. It is very hard luck for Banks, as he had the horse really well. Percy Martin, this last week, has had the tackle on a good-looking brown filly, full sister to Loyalty Bonnie Scotland, and Saracen. Mr Donnelly’s brace of yearlings, the Quilt — Kotuku filly and the colt by Torpedo—Como, have been " sent back from Hastings to their owner’s place at Crissoge. Lord Raven has been putting in some good even track work at Hastings during the past week. Mr Moeller’s bracelet candidate, Enanga, the aged son of Piscarorius, has been a visitor to the course this last week. Vincent will no doubt be able to lick him into shape by the time the bangle comes up for decision. Little Billee, by Waterfall —Bonny Blink, has got through some good sprinting tasks, moving in a nice, free and even style. April 27. The Waipukurau Racing Club have decided to hold their postponed race-meeting on Wednesday, May sth. When Leonora was drowned she had a foal at foot by Dreadnought running with her, and it shared its dam’s fate, and I am sorry to say that Capt. Bussell’s bad luck did not end with this double loss, as last week, when a lad was exercising Katriona, the yearling filly by St. Andrew from Katinka, she got away with him, and in jumping a fence she broke her back, and consequently had to be destroyed. Really, the genial captain has had enough of favours from the fickle Goddess of Fate lately, and I should say it is about time she let up on him and dealt with someone else by way of variety. Percy Martin has the filly by Carlyon—Naomi in hand. The two colts out of Fair Nell and Florence McCarthy are again visitors to the tracks, and seem to have improved with their short cessation from toil. Glengarry has been out with the Hawke’s Bay hounds, the grey ’chaser fencing in his usual 18 carat style. Maher should with anything like ordinary luck have the pleasing satisfaction of leading him in a winner in some of the timber events which will shortly take place in this district. Jim Munn no longer officiates as mentor of Mr Douglas’ team. George Hope has had his team increased by three of the above gentleman’s horses —Sarda, Waterstone, and The Mute—Honeysuckle gelding. Prince Charlie, who is going and looking well, is also an inmate of George Hope’s establishment. Golden Plover was put over the little sticks on the Hastings track last Thursday morning, Forerunner’s son getting through his task in a very pleasing manner. Pinrose, who a couple of seasons back proved a good, consistent stake winner when carrying “ Mr Poitland’s” blue and white livery, was schooled over the fences on Saturday morning, with H. Moore in the pigskin. Hiko’s sturdy son fenced like an old hand at the business, never making a mistake or faltering in the slightest degree. Mr C. H. Loughnan, who at one time owned Tally-ho, has purchased the baby brother to Morag (by Crusader) ; he rejoices in the name of Bartosia and has seen active service over country, having been used lately by the whip of the Hawke’s Bay hounds. Daunt arrived from the South by the Waihora on Saturday. In view of the Steeplechase fixture at Hast- - ings in June, the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club are putting up the schooling fences, consisting of post and rails, a sod bank, and gorse fences. The Town and Suburban Racing Club’s course got a severe doing by the action of the flood, the major portion of their course being covered with silt about 3 feet deep. At a committee meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club, held this morning, it was decided, on account of the impassable state of the roads, the bridges having been washed away and railway communication interrupted, to postpone the Park races from the 12th and 13th May to Wednesday and Thursday, 19th and 20th May, by which time it is anticipated the train traffic will be resumed to Napier. The weights will be declared on Friday, 7th May, and acceptances will be postponed till Tuesday, 11th May. Fred Pannetti, news of whose death in Perth has been received by cable, it will be remembered, took over Rewi (by The Mute—Mina Mina), Escapade (by Puriri —Escape), and Yarra (by Bundoora —Bribery) to the other colonies some

ten years ago. New Zealand sports will best re member Fred as a first-class hand with the cue.

Mr W. Douglas, of Pemahanga, lost by the flood Kopeki (full sister to Kapua and Wheriko), by The Mute—Vira; Spearfeldt, by Nordenfeldt -—Speargrass ; a full sister to Torpina, and two yearlings by Torpedo.
