Funeral of W. Sharpe —Lord Rosslyn.’s split hoof—Gold Spur—Emmeline wins a double—lllness of the son of the D.J.C. secretary —Bookmakers hit, one missing— Blackpool, for sale. Dunedin, April 27. The late W. Sharpe was buried in the Dunedin Cemetery from Laughlin’s Hotel, St. Kilda. There was a big following. Lord Rosslyn developed his old trouble at Riccarton, a split hoof. Ido not fancy he can be got round for our May meeting. What do you Northerners think of the £l4 hack, Gold Spur ? He is a big fancy here for the Thompson Handicap at Wellington, notwithstanding his topweight. After our May meeting he is to be taken to Victoria. Regarding his Easter Handicap win, I am assured on good authority that the stable connections did not back him for much, being afraid of Telemeter and Barshot. The Trident Ruth filly, The Gleaner, has been sold to an up-country goldfields owner.
Laughlin left this morning by express train for Wellington, his horse having gone on previously from Lyttelton in charge of Pine. Emmeline won the double at the Riverton races last week. She is booked to visit Gipsy Grand this season. Bertie James, a son of our respected secretary, Mr Sydney James, is, I regret to state, dying, no hope being held out of his recovery. He is a fine young fellow just entering manhood. His illness is the result of a cold settling on his lungs. He was in the Union Shipping Company. Much sympathy is felt here for his father and the other members of the family. Our bookmakers had another bad time over the C.J.C. Meeting. One of them, who appeared, to be doing very well, has since been missing, leaving many anxious inquirers behind. Blackpool, the Trident —Eleanor colt, so far untried, is on the sale list. He is a very big fellow.
