THE AUCKLAND KENNEL CLUB’S SHOW.
The Auckland Kennel Club has every reason to be pleased with the success of the Fifth Annual Show. The show was held on October 30th and 31st in the Agricultural Hall, and was well patronised, so that the club will probably find a balance on the right side, putting it in a position to renew its efforts in the future to improve the breed of dogs in New Zealand. The exhibition this year was of a highly creditable nature,' the show in collies and fox terriers being particularly strong. The management of the committee was all that was required, and the judge, Mr E. H. Cox, of Sydney, assisted by the stewards (Messrs. J. O. Evett and B. J. Parry), got through his work at an early hour on the first day. Mr Cox, in his official report, highly commends the exhibits, and suggests that the committee should take steps to bring their rules in uniformity with those of the other colonies, and so strengthen the canine fancy throughout A ustralasia. In St Bernards Mr H. J. Moore-Jones obtained first prize and special with Brutus, a finelooking dog by Leo VIII. Second and third honours were gained by the exhibits of Mr E. A. Jones and Mr H. D. Pike. The representative of the latter is a fine-looking dog, his chief fault being his colour. There were not many greyhounds, but the quality was good. Mr Cox awarded the pride of place to Jeannie Deane, a beautiful brindle and white bitch that it would be difficult to fault. Jeannie Deane is by Kangaroo, and was exhibited by Mr T. Pennycook. In open class bitches Mr B. Barber’s Black Bess was placed first. In the pups Donald Dinnie, exhibited by Mr Barber, gained first prize. Mr Cox was of opinion that the greyhound winners would hold their own anywhere in Australia. Only one deerhound was exhibited, and he was so young Mr Cox passed him by. Some very nice pointers were shown. Shot, in the open class, exhibited by Mr E. T. G-eorge, obtained first prize and special. Mr H. J. Moore-Jones’ Don was second, and Mr B. L. Phillips’ Dandy third. Among the setters the first prize and special was awarded to Mr E. A. Stone’s Snipe. Mr Parry’s Duchess 111. won the first prize for bitches. Other successful exhibitors of setters were Mrs. E. K. Thornton’s Grouse (lemon and white, etc.), first; S. Weston’s Spider, second ;T. Sloan 4 s Morpeth, third. Irish setters, dogs : Mr J. Nevill’s Bang, first; Mrs B. Lockhart’s Shot, second. Irish setters, bitches: Mr John Faulder’s Countess of Antrim, first. Gordon setters (champion dog or bitch) : Mr W. Forgie’s Champion Windsor Major, first, and Mr Henderson’s Bess, second. Open class, dogs: Mr M. McLean’s Punch, first and special. Open class, bitches: Mr W. Forgie’s Springle, first. In the Open Class for dog or bitch, under twelve months, Mr W. Vine’s Duke received first prize, and Mr W. J. Brewin’s Pilate second. There was a good exhibition of non-sporting dogs, the competition among the collies, fox terriers, bulldogs, and pugs being particularly keen.
