When the barrier went up the field jumped away in a line, but almost immediately Newhaven started off to make the pace, the representative of the St. Albans stable, Resolute, showing just clear of the others, while Charge (the A.J.C. Derby winner), was the last of the select bunch. The son of Newminster made the pace very sound throughout, and it was evident that the jockey’s instructions had been to make the race a true run one from start to finish. Steadily Newhaven increased his lead, and before the abbatoirs and scraping sheds were reached the boys behind were riding to keep their mounts within a reasonable distance of the fiying leader, who seemed to be revelling in his work. He swept into the straight with a commanding lead, and the issue was never in doubt, he finally winning by six lengths from Resolute, who was only half a length in front of Coil. The Officer was fourth, Eleusinian fifth, Charge sixth, Bundook seventh, and Sabretache eighth. Time, 2min 39|sec. The following is the winning table :—

Betting—4 to 1 against Newhaven, 10 to 1 Marusa, Devon, and Resolute, 12 to 1 Disfigured, 14 to 1 Hopscotch and Broken Hill, 16 to 1 The Chevalier and Damien, 33 to 1 Bloodshot. There was but little delay at the post, and from the Press-stand it appeared as if The Chevalier, Dreamland, Broken Hill, and Preston were quickest on their legs, but it was not long before Damien showed in front, closely followed by The Chevalier and Dreamland. The favourite at this juncture shook off the clustered field and seemed intend in getting to the front as soon as possible. Even before the Judge’s box had been reached the first time, the brilliant son of Newminster was clear of the others, and it looked as if the Melbourne Cup race would be the Derby over again. Around the Saltwater River bend he led his field, galloping well within himself, by quite three lengths, and his supporters thus early shouted with exultation. The race, so far as the rest of the’field were concerned, had developed into a Newhaven chase. Canoona for a time led the others, and then Resolute (the hope of the St. Alban’s stable) tried to lessen the gap between him and Newhaven, and prominent among those behind Resolute as the back stretch to the bridge was traversed, were Dreamland, Canoona, Bloodshot, Preston, Duhallow, Devon, and Trentham. There was no change of importance as they passed the abbatoirs —a point of the race which has found out the weak spot of many a Cup candidate —and as the field swept past the scrapingsheds all eyes were on the leader. Although he had made the pace, and made it very severe, too, he faltered not, but striding on he had actually increased his three lengths lead to five, and it was plain that Resolute, Dreamland, Trentham, Bloodshot, Tire, The Skipper, and Damien, who were at the head of the main body, were at the mercy of the Derby winner. Once in the straight he never gave anything the semblance of a chance and finally won the Melbourne Cup of 1896 with greater ease than any Melbourne Cup has hitherto been won. Bloodshot, the New Zealander, finished second, six lengths behind Newhaven while The Skipper, who came pretty fast at the finish, was two lengths further away third, with Resolute, who had galloped a forlorn chance very gamely, close up fourth, then came Reka, Damien, Tire, Duhallow, Broken Hill, Disfigured, Devon, and Trentham. The last three to finish were Canoona, Hopscotch, and Miraculum. The time was 3min 28|sec. The following is the winning Table :—
