HAWKES BAY.

Death of Rosefeldt—Betting at Napier oil the Cup very slow—Death of two brood mares—Another little equine stranger —Brooklet looking well. ’ Last Friday Mr W. Douglas, of Te Mahanga, had. the bad luck to lose his brood mare, Rosefelclt (Nordenfeldt —Rose d’Amour), who died white foiling to the Robinson Crusoe horse, Quilt. The foal, a colt, also died. Rosefeldt, who was an,exceptionally good two-year-old, also won the New Zealand Cup of 1893, when she carried 7.7. (8. Lindsay), doing the distance, two miles, in 3min 29sec. The non-success of Napier punters over the late C.J.C. National Meeting has had the effect of limiting local betting over the New Zealand Cup, no business worth speaking about having been done by our resident pencillers during the last week. Spinaway and Leonore are two Hawkes Bay mares, besides Rosefeldt, that have recently gone the way of all flesh. I.ady Ledger (by St. Leger—Barbelle) well known on the Wanganui Coast, has a fine colt foal to Seaton Delavel. Brooklet is looking big and jolly, and after her spell has thrown off that soreness which prevented her galloping at the back end of last season. But lam afraid she cannot be keyed up in time for 60 important an event as the New Zealatid Qup.
