Emmeline in work again — Death of a hurdle horse — Changeable weather— Scratching of Casket for the Hunt Club Meeting—Having a little “flutter”— Sb near, and yet so far.
Emmeline is in work again. She is only a pony in size, but a real good one for her inches. 1 fancy her owner always plays too high with her, , - instead of picking a few races for her. Dunmoor, a promising hurdle horse, died at Forbury last Friday through breaking a bloodvessel. The weather for training changed last Wednesday week, since which we have had a continuous --..Scotch mist, characteristic of Dunedin. This has thrown everything buck in training, especially those engaged at our Hunt Club Meeting, on the 12 th September. Without decent going our Cup .candidates will not likely start. Mr B. Curtis has scratched Casket for the Hunt Club Meeting, thus emulating the example of the owner of Beadonwell, Black and Red, Britomarte, and Co. Mr Curtis considers his ‘ horse overweighted, and stated so in the daily papers here. Personally, I think he is making virtue out of necessity, as, according to my last week’s report, I stated Casket wus lame. Capital entries have been received for our Spring Meeting,.and there is a slight increase on last year’s totals. Tbnaru. commences the flat-racing of the Middle Island in three weeks time, and their entry list is indicative that racing is in no way falling .off in this Island. A big endeavour to effect a coup was made here over the Hunters’ Flat Race at Amberley last week. . Ahorse named Breeze was backed locally for £l5O, and it was paying nearly the limit of £lO, but arranged plans often meet with unexpected reverses, as a cast-off from the same stable unexpectedly spoiled the good thing, Armstrong winning, with Breeze second. Our big firm, Barnett and Grant, laid the odds to £lO4. The chance of any compromise between the owners of the Forbury Park and the Dunedin Jockey Club appears mi re and more hopeless. Much interest is taken in what is going on .< by the Dunedin public, as they have for so long been used to a racecourse at their own doors.
