AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.
Saturday next will see the opening of the Auckland Summer Trotting Meeting, and the club anticipate a big attendance at Potter’s Paddock. The meeting will be continued on Wednesday, December 27th and Saturday, December 30th, and a glance at the programme arranged will show that very interesting racing should result, for the principal events have amounts of prize money calculated to induce satisfactory fields. There have been a considerable number of defections since the nominations were made, but there are plenty of runners left. The acceptance list discloses the number of runners as follows . —Maiden Trot Handicap (in saddle), 19; Maiden Harness Trot, 10 ; Telephone Handicap, 9 ; Pony Cup, 10; Maiden Pony Handicap, 12; Maiden Hurdles, 6; December Handicap, 9. Saturday’s programme will be opened with the Maiden Pony Handicap of 30 sovs, 6£ furlongs, and the top weight, Butterfly, 9.7, should win. The Maiden Trot Handicap of 4.osovs, two miles, strikes me as lying between Otakeho scr, Corina 21 sec, and Tinker sosec. The next race will be the Pony Cup Handicap of 15OSOVS, one mile, and this e.vent should result in some excitement and speculation. To cover the winner I take La Grippe 10.7, Gillie 9.7, and Lady May 8.12. For the Maiden Hurdles of 30S0VS, one mile, I take Little Jane 10.0, to be the test of the half dozen acceptances. The Telephone Handicap of 40S0VS, fpur furlongs, is the next item on the card, and I take the contest to rest between La Grippe, 10.7, and Coquette 11., 7.0. The order for the Maiden Trot of 4osovs, two miles, may be Spraydon Lad jsec, Nellie 11. 27sec, and The Broker X7«ec, - The last race on the opening day will be the December Handicap of josovs, six and a half furlongs, and Gillie, Lady
May, and The Dove should supply the winner. The Auckland Trotting Cup will be the principal item on the second day. Eight have declined for this event, and the left in are Yum Yum scr, Rarus losec, Little Ben 31 sec, Mistletoe 34sec, Hurricane 36sec, Mascotte 37sec, Ike 46sec, Ruby 6osec, Sandfly 6480 c, Peter 6jsec, and Tyrone 69. I prefer the chances of Rarus, Peter, or Mistletoe, and Ruby will be found well up. For the Glasglow Trot there are half a dozen withdrawals, and the three best are Rosebud losec, Sparrowhawk 52sec, and Peter 52sec. Kingscraft has not accepted for the Championship Trot, and this leaves Yum Yum scr, and Rarus Bsec to fight for the honour. I expect Rarus to just about win. Seven failed to accept for the Electric Trot, and Ladybird i7sec, Mascotte iSsec, and Yum Yum, who is on the scratch mark, are the best. The acceptances for the Pony Race on the second day were not to hand at time of writing, so I will not venture upon a selection.
