AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.
The acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting disclose a considerable number of defections, but the fields which remain should furnish some interesting racing on December 23rd, 27th, and 30th, the three days set apart for the meeting. On the opening day proceedings will be initiated by the Maiden Pony Handicap. The number of runners for this event has dwindled down from twenty to twelve, and the top weight Butterfly, who has 9.7, should win. For the Maiden Trot Handicap (in saddle) seven have been withdrawn, and this leaves the field at 19 trotters, and to my mind the best in at the han dicapping are Otakeho scr, Corina 21 sec, and Tinker 2osec. Three have withdrawn from the Pony Cup, viz., Miss Gripp, Reuben and Butterfly, and the runners left in are La Grippe 10.10, Gillie 9.7, Vampire 9.0, Lady May 8.12, The Dove 7.12, Helena 7.7, Pukete 7.5, Direct 7.5, and Star 7.0. The top weight has a pretty big impost, but must nevertheless, have a great chance. The leaders should be La Grippe, Gillie and Helena (who caused such a boil over at the last Potter’s Paddock Meeting). Half a dozen are left in the Handicap Maiden Hurdles, and Little Jane, 10.0, should win. The Telephone Handicap has been declined by Miss Grip, Barbary and Franchise, and should rest between the top weight La Grippe and Coquette 11. Eight have withdrawn from the Maiden Harness Trot, and Spreydon Lad, Nellie 11. and The Broker I take to be the leaders. The last race on the open-
ing day will be the December Handicap, and for this tfiere are two scratchings, viz., Butterfly and Miss Grip. Gillie 9.7, Lady May 8.13, and The Dove 7.13, should supply the. winner. The Auckland Trotting Cup will be the principal item on the second day. Eight have declined for this event, and the runners left in are Yum Yum scr, Rarus losec, Little Ben 31s c, Mistletoe 34sec, Hurricane 36sec, Mascotte 37sec, Ike 46sec, Rubv 6osec, Sandfly &4sec, Peter 67sec, and T) rone bgsec. I prefer the chances of Rarus, Peter or Mascotte, and Rub” will be found well up. For the Glasgow Trot there are half a dozen withdrawals, and the three best are Rosebud losec, Sparrowhawk 52sec, and Peter szsec. Kingscraft has not accepted for the Championship Trot, and this leaves Yum Yum scr, and Rarus Bsec, to fight for the honour. I expect Rarus to just about win. Seven failed to accept for the Electric Trot, and Ladybird lysec, Mascotte iBsec, and Yum Yum, who is on the scratch mark, are the best.
Handicaps for the pony events on the second day do not appear until December 20th, and for the third day’s racing until December 28th.
