WELLINGTON.

[by

WIRE.]

October 10. Thb Wellington Racing Club have accepted the tender of Mr Joseph Ames for working the totalisator, and that of Mr G. Johnston, of the Waverley Hotel, for catering in the grand-stand bar and luncheon room during the present season. The stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club met at Featherston on Saturday last, when Mr G. T. F. Hutton was elected secretary zwe? Mr W. Bock resigned. Sixty-four new members were elected, bringing the membership roll up to 210. Messrs. W. E. Bidwill and W. J. Nix were appointed a river protection committee, and Messrs. Nix, Candy, Bock, McShane and Reynolds a course committee. Mr A. Donald was elected steward in place of Mr Hutton, the newly appointed secretary. The sum of £5 was voted to repair the training course at Greytown, and it was resolved to make the same arrangements as last year with Jos. Ames for working the totalisator. Mr J. E. Henry was reappointed handicapper to the club, and the fixing of the summer programme was left to a subcommittee with instructions to limit the stakes to £650, the cup not to exceed £l3O, and the number of races to be eight. Mr W. Tompsitt, of Manakau-Mana-watu line, who purchased the stallion Ernani, has sold him at a profit of £lOO in Australia, and bought instead the entire Longdale by His Grace—Misfortune, who was brought over in the Waihora by W. Kraft last week. He is a big brown horse standing over 16 hands, and has been successful in every hurdle race at Moonee Valley and elsewhere. Kraft has entered into an engagement with Mr Tompsitt to look after the horse. Mr F. Andrews, of Shannon, well known as a horse breeder, had the bad luck the other day to lose his valuable brood mare Lady Ellen, by Knotingly— Zigzag, who died in foaling to Somnus while in Wanganui on a visit to Natator. She was the dam of Zigzag, Fair Ellen, Lord Lyon, Tenby, and Milo-Lord. The last-named is a promising colt in J. Prosser’s stable at Porirua.

The Wellington Racing Club have decided not to exact a licensing fee from owners who train their own horses only. The Dunedin and Canterbury Clubs have decided the same way, but the Hawke’s Bay J.C. demand a fee from anyone who trains a horse.

The two-year-old filly by Escutcheon — Vanity Fair, which was recently brought down by Mr Tatum from Wanganui, has been sold to a young sport in Wellington, and Hilder, the trainer, is now educating her out at the Lower Hutt. She is a good looking filly, and should race well.

Entries for the Wellington Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting were received last Friday. There were 15 for the Maiden, 9 for the Maremar Park Handicap, 15 for

the Pony Trot (in saddle), 10 for the Pony Trot (in harness), 10 for the P.T.O Handicap, and 10 for the Selling Race. The nominations include horses from Christchurch, New Plymouth, Nelson, The Wairarapa, and other places.
