PAPKURANGA HUNT CLUB ANNUAL MEETING.

The declaration of the weights for the annual meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club was made by Messrs Halstead and Rae and Colonel Dawson on Tuesday last, and will be found in another column. In the closed events Long Roper heads the list for the Hunt Club Cup of 3J miles with 13.7, being adjudged a stone better than Jim, a decision which will be generally accepted as a fair one. Selwyn comes third with 11.4, giving Yarraman 2lb, and Spectator, Crazy Kate and Albion 41b each. Even with the weight allotted Long Roper should carry his weight over the 3£ miles comfortably and head the field at the post. Jim and Yarraman should be well up and fight Selwyn for the second or third position. For the Bracelet, one mile, the top weight is Contractor, 12.0, and Isidore comes next at 11.12. This candidate should win, with Recruit, 11.7, and Marablis, 10.10, close up. Long Roper heads the list for the Members’ Hurdles of two miles with 12.0, giving Hopeful Kate 21bs, Oceola, Isidore, and Recruit are together at 11.10, a very fair handicap. Hinemoa has lib and Selwyn 31b less. Potentate heads the I Ost division with 10.12, giving Mirablis 21b, and Villars, Cockade, Jimmy, and Crazy Kate 51b each. The light weight is Bilton at 10.0. Long Roper I do not think will start, and Hinemoa, Selwyn and Recruit should head the field.

For the Tally-ho Steeples of 3 miles Long Roper again heads the weights with the impost of 13.0. As in the Hunt Club Cup, Jim has a stone less, and Mr Percival’s candidate should carry the 12.0 over the three miles in good style. Maritana is handily placed at 11 12. Recruit has 41b less than the weight given him in the two mile event, and Selwyn only 11b less. Aceola is 51b better off than in the Hurdle Race. Saunterer heads the ten stone division with 10.10, lib more than Yarraman. Peter, Albion, Villars, Spectator, Crazy Kate, and Leo have all 10 7. The light weights I don’t expect to furnish the winner, and Long Roper should catch the judge’s eye first. Jim has an excellent chance, and Recruit should also have a say. The open events commence with the Flying Handicap of 5 furlongs, and Tulloch is given top weight with 8.9, St. Kilda having 2lb and His Worship 41b less. The latter two should be well in at the weights, Lady Belle and Acacia are the 8.0 pair, and Retaliation is at the head of the 11 seven stoners with 7.10. Amongst this lot I like Gay Deceiver, who should rattle along with an impost of 7.7. The light weights, Lady Nelson and Tingara, 6.10, have a poor show. St. Kilda should win, with His Worship. Gay Deceiver, and the top weight well up. For the Open Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, Marechai Neil is given the post of honour with 11.0, and should have a good mortgage on the race. Fishmonger is fairly placed at 10.9, at which weight Belmont is also handicapped. Of the two I think the latter has the best of the weight. Ingorina, 10.7, and Neli, 9.10, I don’t care for, but Tattler at lib less than Neli should prove dangerous,

Hinemoa has 9.7, giving sibs to Bombardier and 71bs to the Slumberer. Marechai Neil should fill first place, with Belmont and Tattler close behind. Tulloch is considered the head of the field for the Open Handicap of one mile, and has been given 8.7, just 21bs less than he is to carry in the five furlong event. St. Kilda has 31bs less than Tulloch, and Master Pat and His Worship are at 8.0. Annabelle, Dorothy, Gay Deceiver, and Stake are in the 7.0 brigade, and Vivat and Slumberer are at 6.0 odd. The 8.0 quartette should fill the three leading positions. For the Pony Race of six furlongs Cupid is considered the best, and has been given 10.4. Pica has 9.10, and the new arrival Storyteller has 31b less. Southern advices label this pony dangerous, but I don’t know whether the owner will run at the weight allotted. Bodney has 8.9, but it is said this pony cannot stay above four furlongs. Remembering how he romped home hard held at the last race at Avondale recently, I am not inclined to doubt his ability to stay six furlongs, and consider him a likely winner. Robin looks handy at 7.10, and Retrenched at 11b less should run well if the form displayed by Mr Gunnings’ pony at the first Avondale event is kept up. Rodney should win with Robin and the top weight well up. The acceptances for the meeting are not due till to-morrow, so that the next 24 hours may materially affect the chances of the various candidates.
