AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

Mr Evett having declared the weights for thetwo principal events atthe A.R.C’s. second Spring meeting, viz., the Prince of Wales Handicap of 175 sovs., one mile and a half, and the Handicap Hurdles of 80 sovs., two miles, enables me to try and forestall the decision of the judge. In the mile and a half event Brigand is given the doubtful and unexpected honour of topweight, and I do not for a moment think that Mr Kerekere’s representative has a chance. Van Dieman and Brown Alice at 8.7 do not read like winners. Ingorina, 8.2, should have a good following, but I do not fancy his chance much. At 7.11 Ida has a very big mortgage on the race, and Coalscuttle at 7.8 also reads comfortably. The other seven-stoners, Eve, Tulloch, and His Worship, are nicely weighted and should all run well, and Annabelle, 6.10. Yattenfeldt, 6.9, and Gay Deceiver, 6.7, have not been badly treated. At the weights there is nothing to touch Ida, and I shall expect Mrs Lennard’s representative to furnish the winner, with Coalscuttle and His Worship as the next best. For the Handicap Hurdles, of 80 sovs, two miles, thirteen horses have been weighted and Mangere heads the list with 12.5. Satyr comes next with 11.10 and should have a say in the race if fit and well. The third weight, 10.9, Marechai Neil is decidedly dangerous and should carry the bulk of the betting money. Fishmonger and Belmont have 10.6, and the latter is my fancy at the weight and should finish in the first flight. Despised has 10.4 and gives ilb. who will undoubtedly make a big run over the two miles. Deceiver is at the bottom of the 10.0 division and will probably finish close on the heels of the first three. Auckland. Ika Vuka, Tattler, Hinemoa and Bombardier comprise the 9 stone odd division, and Tattler, half way down the list, at 9.5, I take to be the pick of the bunch. Providing they start I shall expect the positions of honour to be taken by Marechai Neil, Fright, with Satyr and Despised close on the heels of the first two.
