FIXTURES. SENIORS. July 22. —Grafton v. Parnell City v. Suburbs Ponsonby v. Newton

The position of the senior teams in the senior championship is now as follows : —

In Saturday’s Parnell v. Ponsonby match, Ponsonby kicked off, and for some time the game was chiefly a forward one, the Parnell forwards making the game very warm for the blue and blacks, repeatedly hemming them in the 25. By good play, however, Ponsonby brought the ball back to midfield, and more fast open play took place. From a pass Elliott made a good run, and but for Riley must have scored. The Parnell forwards continued the attack, and Whitby, after a good run, scored for Parnell. The kick at goal was successful —Parnell 5, Ponsonby o. More open play now took place, and Ronayne shortly before time was called registered Parnell’s second try ; Kissling missed the kick—Parnell 7, Ponsonby o.

After the usual interval Parnell kicked off, and at once placed Ponsonby on the defensive, the ball being continually in their 25, and from a scrum close on their line, Clarke secured the ball and scored. The kick at goal was a failure—Parnell 9, Ponsonby o. Ponsonby now seemed to wake up, and for a short time held their own with Parnell. The Parnell forwards, however, were not to be denied, and getting on another rush, Clarke scored near the post. Kissling’s kick was successful Parnell 14, Ponsonby o. After this Ponsonby seemed to go all to pieces, and Geard and Mitchell scored two tries in quick succession for Parnell, from one of which Kissling landed another goal. When the bell rang the score stood— Parnell 21, Ponsonby o. Newton v. City. —City kicked off, and Newton returned to the centre From the line out Caradus started a passing run, the ball eventually going out at Newton’s 25. Good play, however, on the part of Donald and Heffernan brought the oval back to the centre, and the play for some time was very even. From a scrum Caradus made a good pass to Pilkington, who passed on to Hales, who crossed the line and scored ; Cole’s kick was a failure —City 2, Newton o. From the kickout Newton rushed the ball up the field, and play went on for some time in City’s 25. Good play, however, on the part of Stevenson and Caradus brought the oval back to the centre, where it remained until lime was called. Newton kicked off and rushed the ball up to City’s 25, where play went on for some time. From a scrum the ball was passed to Moore, who dashed across the line and scored for Newton. Donald’s kick was successful —Newton 5, City 2. City now made determined efforts to score, but without avail, and when time was called no alteration had been made in the score—Newton 5, City 2. • Suburbs v. Grafton. — Suburbs kicked off, and Grafton returned to the half-way flag. For some time scrums and open play ensued, the game being very even, first in Suburbs 25 and then in Grafton’s 25, until Younger livened things up by a good run, and scoring for Grafton. The kick at goal was a failure —Grafton 2, Suburbs o. From the kick out until half-time passing runs and marks were exchanged, and the whistle blew with the ball in the centre. Sides were changed without any spell, and Pennalligan kicked off. The Suburbs forwards, with a good dribbling rush, brought the ball to Grafton’s 25. Good play, however, on the part of Gaudin and Moncur relieved Grafton, and the latter, continuing the attack, compelled Suburbs to force. For some time now scrums and short dodgy runs were the order of the day, and from a forward rush by Grafton, assisted by the fumbling of the Suburbs men, T. Whiteside scored the second try for Grafton. Pennalligan’s kick was successful. Grafton 7, Suburbs o. Uninteresting play followed for some time, until the Suburbs forwards, with a good dribbling rush, carried the ball over the line and Trevena scored. The kick was unsuccessful. Grafton 7, Suburbs 2. •'< From this out .until time was called the

ball remained in Suburbs quarters, the game ending—Grafton 7, Suburbs 2.
