CRICKET.

Williamson’s Opera Company on Wednesday week defeated a scratch Gordon team after an exciting and interesting match which all concerned thoroughly enjoyed. The scores were — Gordon 49, Opera 62. On Saturday the company played a weak team of United, and handsomely beat the old club. United could only put up 39, the promising young player, Douglas Hay, alone getting double figures, and carrying out his bat for a steady 13. Neilson with 6 wickets for 22, and Rice with 4 for 17, bowled most effectively. Ford’s wicketkeeping was brilliant, and the fielding all round excellent. The company lost seven wickets for 52, Ford with a well hit 24, and Watson with a meritorious 12, getting double figures. Mr. Bracy has now played three innings without losing his wicket. If he goes on in that style his average (when he gets one) should be a startling one. Hawkins, with 5 wickets for 17, bowled well for United. Newell Lusk kept wicket most creditably. Gordon had a match, First Eleven against the rest of the Club. The Club, batting sixteen men, were all disposed of for 73. Kallender, a recent arrival from England, showed |firstrate batting form for 34, and looks very like a rep. man. Norman Williams captured six wickets fora run a piece. Howard had 4 for 19. The Eleven scored 32 for 3 wickets, Moresby (not out) 18, and Williams 12. With Dave Meldrum back in its ranks, Howard to fill H. H. Lusk’s place as a bowler, and the new acquisition, Kallender, who besides being a fine bat, is said to be an excellent fast bowler, Gordon should show up well this season.
