(The Editor Sporting Review.) Sir, —Many of your readers will doubtless remember that on the 29th January last the horse Orakei was killed and its rider (A. Byers) severely injured while competing in the Takapuna Steeplechase. Much sympathy was extended to Byers in his great misfortune, and it was suggested in your columns that a subscription list be opened so as to give the sporting public an opportunity of expressing Jtheir sympathy in a practical shape. One of these lists was, I believe, left at the office of the Takapuna Jockey Club, it being expected that the winners at the meeting would gladly contribute. Other lists were handed round, and I amongst others gave my mite. It is now exactly nino months since the mishap, but although I am a regular reader of your paper I have never seen any reference to the subject. I assume, however, that the money collected has long since been paid to Byers, but I think, Mr. Editor, that in justice to the subscribers the particulars should have been made public.—l have, etc., Subscriber.
