Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting.

We are now in possession of details of the first and second day’s racing of the Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, and appended will be found a resume of the principal events : — First Day—Saturday, Sept. 10.

The ball was set rolling with the Handicap Hurdles of zoosovs, about two miles and a-half, for which a field of 15 went to the post, the winner being Mr. T. Payten’s nomination Pro Consul, 11.0. He ran a good horse and was only beaten a neck by Mr. W. Yeomans’ b g Frantic, aged, 10.0 (Longford), and third place was filled by Mr. A. Clarke’s ch g Tramp, 9.11. Nolan rode the exNew Zealander Vanguard, who had 10.5 up. Time, smin There were 18 runuers for the Trial Stakes of zoosovs, one mile and aquarter, and T. Payten’s stable again provided the favourite in Ulric, by

Martini Henry—Uralla, the property of Mr. “J. B. Clark.” He started favourite at 5 to 2 against, and won by two lengths from J. Monaghan’s nomination Isaac, Mr. Forrester’s Ronda being third. Time, zmin Among the starters were Australian Peer’s halfbrother Prime Minister, Aurelius, Argos, Real Lace, and Lady Trenton. The AJ.C. Derby of soosovs, one mile and a-half, next came on for decision, and the following went to the post Mr. J. B. Clark’s ch c Camoola, by Chester —Copra (Huxley); Mr. J. B. Clark’s b c Arquebus, by Martini Henry —Acm6 (Liddiard) ; Mr. G. Hill’s b c Blarney Stone, by Marvellous —La Belle (Ellis) ; Mr. H. C. Dangar’s b c Attalus, by Welcome Jack —Signora (Nerriker), and Mr. J. Gough’s b c Dan O’Connor, by Marvellous —Mavourneen (Parker). Odds of 5 to 2 were laid on Camoola, in whose interests Arquebus made the pace. At the end of the first furlong Arquebus was leading Attalus by three lengths, Blarney Stone being next. In this order they raced to the seven furlongs post, at which point Arquebus was leading Attalus by six lengths, with Camoola lying third. From this point Attalus was beaten, and Camoola began to move up to the leader, Arquebus entering the straight three lengths in front of him. Catching him at the distance, Camoola came on and won by three parts of a length from Arquebus, with Blarney Stone two lengths away third, and Dan O’Connor last. Attalus was pulled up, and on returning to the paddock it was seen that he had broken a blood vessel. The time of the race was 2min 4-osec. This is Huxley’s second consecutive victory in the A.J.C. Derby, he having been on the back of Stromboli last year, and Stromboli, like Camoola, was owned by the syndicate that race under the name of Mr. “J. B. Clark.” Camoola is by Chester (winner of the V.R C. Derby and Melbourne Cup of 1877) out of Copra (sister to Navigator and Trident), by Robinson Crusoe (brother to Onyx) out of imported Cocoanut. The capital field of 25 went to the post for the Epsom Handicap of iooosovs, one mile, and Payten’s stable had shown such good form in the previous events that backers now made another of his string (Trieste) favourite at 4 to 1. Odds of 5 to 4 were laid on Autonomy, who was ridden by Liddiard. 4 to 1 was taken about Marvel, and 6 to x about Bungebah. Realm showed the way to the seven furlongs post, where St. Albans 11. began to move up, and at the end of the next furlong he had a clear lead of Realm, with Bungebah coming fast on the outside, and Autonomy still last. The field closed up at the half-mile post, where Bungebah shot to the front. From that out he was never headed, and won easily by a length and a-half from Oxide, who beat Autonomy by three parts of a length in the run home. St. Albans 11. was fourth, and Marvel fifth.
