OUR NAPIER LETTER.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Mr. R. Peene has secured the Forerunner — Forest Queen colt, formerly owned by Mr. Gollan. He is an unnamed, rising three years old, and half-brother to the Bard. Rosefeldt, Nordenfeldt —Rose d’Amour, got badly knocked about at Dunedin. In the Forbury Handicap she was run into by Kulnine, sustaining a nasty gash on one of her legs. I was rather surprised on seeing Prospect’s name in the Auckland Steeplechase entries. One mile and a-half over hurdles is considered to be about the length of his tether. The money that was dropped in this district over Cynisca and Couranto in Wanganui would almost equip a man-of-war. I would like to see a good honest go between Day Dream and North Atlantic over four or five furlongs. There are some people here who fancy Morion for the Hawke’s Bay Cup, notwithstanding his penalty. He is a horse punters will keep their turf eye on. After his recent performances Whakawatea is a strong tip for the Railway Stakes Handicap at Hastings, and certain it is that Mr. Hungerford has two good representatives in his flying two-year old, and Dunkeld’s relative, Heather Bell.

It is probable that Rosefeldt will be raced no more this season.

Crown Jewel has attained a lolb penalty for the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Her weight is now yst 61b, which should prove as handy as a pocket guide. Splendid nominations have been received for the Waipukurau races at Easter. Mr. Douglas’ two jumpers, Waterfall aud Waterbury, were offered for sale in Dunedin, but could not find buyers. Mr. Ormond has parted with his two-year old Lustre, Nordenfeldt —Radiance, who, after winning the Selling Two-year Old Race at Dunedin, was knocked down to Mr. J. Stephenson for When Mr. Ormond’s Hippomenes won Tattersail’s Selling Plate at Christchurch, Mr. Stephenson was the buyer of the son of St. Leger. Queen of Trumps, Leolinus —Maid of Athol, who ran second in the Wanganui Cup, was never nominated for the Hawke’s Bay Cup. At future agricultural shows here trotting matches and high jumps will be eliminated from the programme. As anticipated, Retina did not start at Wanganui. Why should she if she had ulb less to carry in the Hawke’s Bay Cup ? Fit and well, I think her most dangerous at Hastings. At present the contest appears to me to be a match between her and Crown Jewel, who will carry a lot of money if she starts, after her win at Wanganui. La Petite Fille was fourth at Wanganui, but I cannot see her in the race at Hastings, even with Queen of Trumps and Dudu out of the road, and Crown Jewel raised ten pounds.
