OUR TARANAKI LETTER.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
New Plymouth, March 8 Our local sports are anxious to know why J. B. Williamson gave “Jay” Russell the cut direct in the New Plymouth railway station on Friday night last. J.. 8. arrived by express train from Wanganui, and on getting off at the station here he shook hands with several local friends. “ Jay,” who was among the number, held out his paw, but J. B. acted like “ Douglas ” to “ Mannion,” only he didn’t speak—he only gave “ a well-bred stare ” (this I quote, as it is no original with me). We are anxious to find out the casus belli between such distinguished men, but cannot so far. One of our sportsmen, “ Mr. Keswick,” has purchased a five-year-old gelding, by The Mute —locast, from Mr. Douglas of Hawke’s Bay. The horse, I believe, is veiy touchy when saddled, and will play up exceedingly. His new owner will put him to the “ lepping ” business, I think.
The jumpers Recruit, Atlantic, Flukem, Lady Onslow, and Cingalee are being prepared for the hack events at the Anniversary Meeting. There are several also in training for the hack flats. The local two-year old Snapcap started twice at Wanganui, and finished third in the Nursery Handicap on the second day. This gelding requires more age on him to make him a fast galloper. He has got the look of a good one, and should be heard of later on. The Hack Meetings at Marton (March 10), Sandon (March 17), and Waverley-Waitotara (March 17) are engaging the attention of local sports. I expect to see a few of the prizes come our way.
