TARANAKI SPORTING NOTES.
(from our 'own Correspondent.) New Plymouth, July 24. William Barnard was to-day committed for trial at the Supreme Court for breaking and entering the butcher’s shop of William Bayly, and stealing therefrom a leg of mutton, sheep’s lights, and some lurhps of saltpetre. A charge of stealing from the till of the Prince of Wales’ Hotel at Bell Block, on May 25, was adjourned till Monday. Much sympathy is expressed for the accused in his trouble. Jenny is being brushed along in her work, and it is a certainty, if she keeps well, that she will take the trip to Christchurch next month. Her chance in the Steeplechase reads well.
An addition to the local draught stock has been made, Mr. J. F. Hooker having purchased Nugget II from a gentleman at Rangitikei, for The death of old Mokamoka, who, as near as could be judged, was 14 or 15 years old, was a great blow to Mr. Jim Wells, her owner. She was stinted io Lionel. Mr, Wells has a Governor colt and a Dauphin filly out of the mare, and these he intends to put into “ Jay ” Russell’s hands for training. The Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase are the topics—or rather the probable winners are —among the local sports. For the Hurdles, looking at the full list, I prefer the chances of Norton gst 51b, Sentinel nst gib, Kirriberley gst jib, Christmas gst, and Foxtori at gst rolb will be dangerous if he is a jumper. Theorem, at 9st 21b, reads well, but I doubt his ability to get to the end of a fast-run two miles, so I pass him. For the Steeples, leaving out those who are on “ the other side,” I like Ahua i2St lolb, and Jenny nst nib, the best. Oeo lost 61b will be dangerous, and Darnley at Ilb less ought to have a say.
- Percy Johnstone returned home on Tuesday night. He says that he could have walked in with Whalebone in the Open Steeple at the Wellington Hunt Club, even after the run-off; if he had not collided with Begorrah. The little incident about the for which he was “ had ” at the Wellington Winter Meeting, is a thorn in Percy’s side, as the best part of the money was entrusted to him to put On. The horses Tommy and Pawa, both excellent jumpers, that left here for Auckland on Tuesday last, should pick up a few races about Auckland; They have never had a fair show to prove what they are really made of. Tommy has been messed about a great deal during his career, in which he has pulled off a number of small events over sticks. ■ Pawa also has won a small face over sticks. He is a good trotter, but wants to be trained to turf “ going.” The local pony Poppy; by Resolution; will, I am given to understand, have a cut-iri at a pony meeting in your district next September. She is not a bad” pony; but in your regions there are some regular hummers who can get under the standard, so I don’t consider her show will be A 1.
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, will be held oh the 12th AugdSt; dt Christchurch'.
