AUCKLAND SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
The fifth annual carnival of the Auckland Swimming Club takes place to-day in the Auckland Graving Dock by the Hobson Street wharf, and promises to eclipse anything of the kind previously held here. A marquee will be erected, in which afternoon tea will be provided by the Club for its lady visitors, and seats will be placed all round the dock so as to give everyone an opportunity of having a good view of each of the races. The handicaps are excellent with one or two exceptions, and the finishes should, in consequence, be very exciting. The chief items on the programme are the 100 yds. Championship of N.Z., and the 100 yds. Ladies’ Bracelet. For the former race four will face the starter, and as each one is confident of success the judges will, I think, have some difficulty in separating them. My fancy is Nicholson, with Scott for second place. The Ladies’ Bracelet will bring out about twenty-three, and will be swum in three heats and a final. The result will possibly be: — Brigham ist., Gittos 2nd., Cosser 3rd., with Leo. Myers for a boil over. The Back Race should be won by A. L. W. Maclean. For the 80 yds. Maiden I fancy Goldwater and Cassidy. There are other races on the programme which will be the cause of a lot of amusement for the spectators, such as the Siamese Race, Hurdle Race, and Blindfold Race, and as the Committee have worked very hard to ensure success, the gathering should be a very successful one.
