ATHLETICS.

DEMONSTRATION SPORTS.
The Demonstration Sports on Monday were a great success, if we may judge from the crowd assembled in the Domain, but the Committee did not work as they should have done in the matter of keeping the ground clear. The sports committee seemed to me to do all the work connected with the sports. In this respect they have a lesson to learn from our amateur club.
Boonstra was in good form, and won the Maiden Race, 150 yards, and Demonstration Handicap, 150 yards. Brady, with 150 yards, won the walk, with Smith second. It was a good race between these two.
E. Swan, 11 yards, caused a bit of a surprise by winning the All Comers Handicap easily from Purdy and Cummins. I believe he hails from Gisborne.
The best race of the day was no doubt the 1 mile, Howie, 5 yards, winning all out by 2 yards from McDermott, who made a very faint effort at the finish. T. A. Wilson was third.
A. E. Smith, who was second in the walk, also won the 1 mile from the 140 yards mark.
A.A.A. & C.C. SPORTS.
The sports in connection with the above Club eventuate on the 22nd instant, and as the day gets nearer the more interesting is the work in the Domain.
Laird is going in great style, and will make it extremely merry in any race in which he may compete. Hutchinson is going strong and well, and the talk of the hour is the great run the public will have when he and Laird both meet on even terms. Many seem to prefer the chances of Laird, but I shall give my opinion later on. Harvey and Christie are greatly improved, and must have a say in any events they start for.
Davis is moving along in nice style, and seems to have a good dash of pace. The two Martins are worth watching, and will make good “ peds.” if they stick to it. Impey, I hear, is a much improved man, but I have not seen him go. No doubt I will have a chance of seeing him during next week. Hill, of North Shore, is another man who is reported to have put in some sensational work, and is reckoned a “ dead bird ” for the Maiden Race, 150 yards.
