J It is about time the return match was fired between the “A” Battery and South Franklin Mounted Infantry, as over two years has lapsed since these companies first met. It seems that both are waiting for a challenge from each other, but it is the place of the South Franklins to send it as they were defeated. A daylight inspection parade of the “A ” Battery was held last week, there being a splendid muster under Capt. Geddis and Lieuts. Haultain and O’Brien. The presentation of the company’s belt to Sergt. Jas. Parslow took place, place, but I think the Captain must have forgot himself when he called upon the men to give three cheers for the winner whilst on parade. The four rifle companies mustered on Tuesday last at 6.30 p.m., for an inspection parade, there being a very fair attendance. The men were taken over by Capt. Kohn and after a short preliminary drill in the shed were marched to Princes Street, where they were put through battalion movements, at which they shaped very well. After returning to the shed Surgeon Dawson, on behalf of Capt, Cooper of the Victoria Rifles, presented to Private Beamish the Schapp Belt which he won at the recent competition. The parade state was then taken by Staff Sergt.-Major Grant and the men dismissed. A shooting contest took place on Monday last at the Mt. Eden Range between the Victoria Rifles and South Franklin Mounted Infantry, when the former gained an easy victory having 93 points to spare. The ranges were 200. 400, and 500 yards, seven shots at each distance. The scores are :— VICTORIA TEAM.
Majority for Victoria Team, 93 points. The visitors were entertained at breakfast and luncheon by the Victorias, and went home fully delighted with the day’s outing. The members of the Martini-Henri Club held a sweepstakes match on Monday last at the Onehunga Range, Gun. C. P. Taylor of the <* A ” Battery again taking first place with two points to spare. The members of the “O” into camp tonight at Fort Resolution for their usual course of training.
