December 20. Breaking-up. Quite a large and enthusiastic audience attended at the Town Hall, by invitation of Mrs Whitehorn and her pupibs, on Monday evening last, on the occasion of the annual breaking-up -and distribution of prizes of the Hamilton Girls' School. A very pretty setting of Grimm’s fairy tale. ’ Princess Snowdrop,’’ was acted by the scholars. The prizes were presented by the Rev. E. Cowie to the dux of the school, Mies Frances Jolly, and the many other prize-winners. Mrs Whitehorn, in a short and earnest speech, thanked Mies Lovell for -her untiring efforts, Mies Thompson,-and'those present, as well as the pupils for their artistic gift to herself. A few of those present were Mns H. Valder, Mrs A ule, Mrs Reece, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Cowie, Mrs Hume, Mrs McDiarmid, Mrs Barugh, Airs Lorie, Airs Swarbrick, Airs Holloway, Mieses McPherson, Airs and Miss Williams, Mrs Law-son, Aliss Gordon, Airs Tompkins, Aliss Tompkins, Airs Coventry, Airs and Aliss Burd, Airs Stevens, Misses Stevens, Airs English, Airs Ward.’Alrs Allan, Mrs P. P. White. Baud Carnival. On Wednesday Airs A. Hyde gave, an afternoon and evening, function in aid of the Band Carnival. All the guests were requested to bring handkerchiefs as gifts in the afternoon, while the evening visitors brought fancy articles or chocolates. A "book” competition passed the time pleasantly in the afternoon. Airs Garnham received the prize for the most original representation, Airs Aiken for the number of correct titles. A short ‘’Kim” competition was won by Miss Reilly and Miss O’Neill. Airs Hyde received her guests in a vieux rose frock trimmed with lace. Among those present were: Airs Greenslade, in pretty shantung frock with embroidered apron effect and black buttons, high plumed hat: Mrs Reece, quaint grey shantung gown with primrose tulle, black hat; All’s F. E. Smith, lagoon blue poplin with lace vest; Airs Bond, blue linen, hat with vieux rose touches; Airs Garnham, cornflower blue hopsack with pretty Persian insertion, blue hat; Aliss Graham, white muslin, tuscan hat with flowers; Aliss Valder, sen., grey dress with black touches, black toque; Airs Aiken, white muslin, large hat; Airs Tompkins, pinstriped voile with blaek pipings, * floral hat; Aliss Tompkins, white muslin, black hat; Airs Julian (Te Kuiti), bronze green frock prettily braided, hat to match; Mies Swinburne, champagne poplin, small hat; Miss Brewis, pink embroidered muslin, large hat with feathers: Airs Manning, sweet grey muslin frock, with deep cream spotted net fichu, large hat with lace rosette; Mieses White, white muslin; Airs Lichfield, cream, blue chiffon scarf. The evening function was a moonlight concert from the verandah. The bands were in attendance and played at intervals, while several favourite vocalists gave items, forming a programme of more than usual merit. A squad of sensor cadets are journeying to Christchurch with the Territorials to take part in the military tournament Xmas week. They leave Hamilton by the Main Trunk express on Sunday and return that day week. Air and Airs Alair have gone home to AVhangarei, where they will doubtless have a lovely- holiday among so many relatives. Supporters of the Benedicts’ Ball will be pleased to hear that the sum of £lO •has been handed over from them to the Society for the Protection of Women and Children by the secretary of their committee.. Airs AV. J. Hunter and her folks are spending Xmas in Auckland, where they have exchanged houses with Airs O'Hailoran. It is pleasing to. hear that £47 has been banked towards the new church fund from the garden fete lately held at “Ed'inthorpe.” Air and Airs Mears are to spend several weeks in Ruesell. .Alins Bond is accompanying 'them as far as Auckland. Air and Airs Hurd-Wood are spending Xmas at Howick. Air and Airs Gillies and the children are going to Howiek for the holidays. Mrs Julian (Te Ku'iti) came up for the band functions at Mns Hyde’s, where she is staying for a couple of days.
