August 24. Afternoon Tea. Mrs Berwick had a pleasant little gathering on Friday at her residence in Wellington Street. Some of those present were: Mis. IL ( . Seymour, Mrs. and Miss Chambers. Mrs. Arthur. Miss Arthur, Mrs. Haughey, Mrs. Allen, Miss Greensill etc. Personal. Mrs. and Mi.-s Allen have gone to visit friends in Wellington for a few days. Captain Avery, of the Defence Force, and Captain Surgeon Redman visited Mahakipawa last week, and held a medical inspection of youths joining the territorials. Messrs. Hall (guard), and Carnahan (driver), of the train which was derailed by a slip on the line during the late flood, were presented—-Mr. Hall with a sol’d silver combined match-box. sovereign ease, and stamp-holder, and Mr. Carnahan, with a silver pencil holder, both of which were inscribed with the initials of the recipients and the date of the occurrence, from the >1 hool children and teachers who were marooned in the train for a night and part of next day. The guard and driver had made their detention something to be remembered in the way of a splendid picnic. Mr. and Mrs. Healey have returned from a very pleasant holiday to Christchurch and Wellington. Mrs. Wicks (Blenheim) is -taying with her people in Picton during Mr. Wicks’ absence in Nelson, where he has gone to play golf. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur ( haytor are visiting Mrs. and the Misses Allen in Picton. Mr. ami Mrs. McCormick. Watamunga. Queen Charlotte -Sound, left for Auckland
