HAMILTON.

April 20. A Dance. On Easter Monday Mrs. W. A. Oliver gave a dance for young people at her residence, “ Wartie.” Although this is some four or five miles from Hamilton, the drive added to the pleasure, particularly the return trip, in the brilliant moonlight. Dancing took place in the large billiard room, and the supper was exactly the right thing in the young folks’ opinion. Mrs. Oliver received, her young guests in a black evening dress, with silver beaded scarf; Miss Jessie Oliver (debutante), pretty white silk trimmed with silver; Miss Margaret Oliver (debutante), white silk with bead trimming; Misses Oliver, white ihuslin; Miss Bollard, pale blue silk: Miss Lovell, blue silk with silver trimming; Miss Vida Hunter, dainty pink ninon; Misses Brenda Hunter, white pailette, lovely Oriental trimming; Kathleen Knight, soft cream silk, with pearl front; Gladys Tompkins, pale blue; Ri.ro Brewis, white muslin; Enid Heywood, white muslin. A Reception.

A garden party was to have been tendered the commandant of the New Zealand Forces, General Godley, and the Minister for Defence, Hon. G. Fowlds, on Friday, on the occasion of his first visit to the Waikato. The weather, however, was so very rough and uncertain, gales of wind alternating with sharp showers, that it was with a feeling of relief one heard the garden party had been abandoned in favour of a reception in the Town Hall. General Godley spoke very forcibly on the duty of all citizens to give hearty support to the new Defence Scheme, and he felt sure the result would be an efficient army of which we would all be proud. The Hon. George Fowlds, Colonel Bell, Mr. Greenslade, M.P., and the Mayor (Mr. Young) also gave speeches in the same vein. There were a few ladies on the platform, among whom were Mrs. Fowlds, in black satin coat and skirt, lift-ge plumed hat, white boa, and Mrs. Allan Bell, black dress relieved with white. Among those present were: Mrs. Hunter, in pretty amethyst gown, black hat; Miss Hunter, navy costume, large black hat; Miss Vida Hunter, striped Norfolk costume; Mrs. Yule, tweed Norfolk coat tweed hat to match; Mrs. McLeod, tabac costume, large black hat with wings’; Mrs. Tompkins, coat and skirt; Mrs. Crabb, green Sicilian costume, hat with black; Miss O’Neill, green costume, wide hat trimmed with green.
