NAPIER.
December IS. Breaking Up. This week the Christmas holidays commence for boys and girls, and “breaking up” ceremonies have been the order of the day. The distribution of prizes for the Boys’ and Girls’ High School took place in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday evening. The prizes were given away by Mrs T. C. Moore, wife of the Chairman of the Board of Governors. Mrs Moore wore a most becoming gown of black velvet, with cream lace berthe; Miss Greig and her lady assistants wore their college gowns and mortar boards. Before wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Dr. Moore addressed a few words to the pupils, taking for his subject Ruskin’s ideas on education. At the conclusion of his speech cheers were given for Dr. and Mrs Moore, Miss Greig, and Mr Polson. A few- of those present were: Mrs Polson, Miss Greig, Miss V. Greig, Miss Antil, Miss Gillis, Mrs Bowen, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Craig, Mrs Martin, Mrs Hindmarsh, Misses Hindmarsh (2), Miss Thompson, Mrs Riddel, Miss Riddel, Mrs Geo. Kelly, Mrs McLernon, Miss M'. Anderson, Miss E. Smith, Miss Williams (2), Miss Dean (2), Miss Lever (2), Mrs Hannah, Miss Retemyer, Mrs A. 11. Wilson. Bluff Hill School. One of the prettiest “break-ups” was at the Bluff Hill School on Thursdayevening, when a play “Magic Charm,” was acted by the pupils. The schoolroom was beautifully decorated, the scene of the play being the Queen’s bower in a
wood. Various songs and reeitatioM were given by the children, and altos gether it was a most delightful evening’s amusement, and great credit is due to Miss Beharrell. Pupils' Concert. A vocal and instrumental concert was given in the Athenaeum Hall on Monday evening by Mr Horace Weber and his pupils. The programme was quite an excellent one. and reflected great credit on master and pupils. There was a large attendance, and the various items were thoroughly appreciated. The Empire Picture Theatre. The new picture theatre opened witlii a packed house on Wednesday evening. The theatre is in a very central position., and is the second permanent picture show in Napier. Amongst those present at the opening performance were fl Mrs Lusk, Miss Lusk, Mrs and Misg Dewes, Mrs J. C. George, Mrs Lever, Mrs Snodgrass, Miss B. Hunter, Mrsf Stewart, Mrs Christie. Mrs Hetley, Mrs A. Humphries, Mrs White. Mrs Coatesi Misses Coates, Mrs A. C. Russell. Personal. Mrs Lusk and family have gone iof Gisborne for the Christmas holidays. Mrs Barron, of the Hutt, Wellington-, who has been visiting Hawke’s Bay, has returned to her home. Miss Gillam left last week for Europe. It is Miss Gillam’s plan to spend some time in France. Miss Chapman has returned from’ Christchurch. Miss Fell has returned to her home ill Nelson. Mrs and Miss Begg have left for Dunedin, where they intend spending the summer months. Miss Hoadley has returned from Wanganui.
Anti! ha, resigned her position in the Napier Girls High School. Miss Eva Thompson (Christchurch)’ is visiting Mrs Hindmarsh, Green Meadows.
