October 28. Garden Party. The garden party given at Bishopdale by the Bishop of Nelson and Mrs. Mules to meet the clerical and lay delegates to the annual Diocesan Synod was this year quite spoilt by the rainy weather. Those who ventured out and braved the elements Were amply rewarded by the delightful afternoon spent indoors. Several musical items added to the enjoyment of those present. At Home. Au "At Home” was also given by Mrs. Mules in the Bishop's Schoolroom to meet Miss Whitaker, of England, who made an interesting speech on the aims and objects of the Girls’ Friendly Society. Some of those present were: Mrs. Mules, who wore a black costume and mauve bonnet; Miss Mules, blue cloth coat and skirt, pale blue hat with pink roses; Mrs. and Miss Richmond. Mrs. and Miss Tomlinson. Mrs. Hunter-Brown, Misses Paisley, Miss Poole, Mrs. W. Harley, Miss Jones, Mrs. and Miss Kenipthorne, .Mrs. Eastcott, Mrs. Johnston.
Physical Culture Display. There was a large attendance at the School of Music, when the pupils of the Gills' t'ollegp~guve Hn’rriannual physical culture display. This year the. classes' have lieen conducted by Miss B. Greenwood. in the absence of Miss W. Greenwood. and the tutor is to be congratulated on the degree of excellence reached by the girls. The programme comprised rings, clubs, dumb-bells, wands, Swedish drill and marching. Several of the girls contributed musical items during the evening. Euchre Party.
A delightful euchre party was given at the "Haeremai” by the Misses King and Mr. R. M. King (Gordon Downs) on the evening of their brother’s wedding. Miss King, who received the guests, was charmingly gowned in turquoise blue taffeta; Miss B. King, a pretty pink frock; Miss Sutherland-Smith, cream net and lace gown; Miss Gilkison, black velvet; Miss Wastney, tangerine taffeta; Miss Stevens, blaek: Miss M. Perrin, white silk; Miss D. -Webb, smart frock of black chiffon taffeta; Miss- Marjorie Pearless (Wakefield), white satin; Miss Coster, white chiffon; Miss F. Coster, heliotrope taffeta; Messrs. R. M. King, C. Harley, R. Dodson. Hamilton (3), J. Houlker, Wastney, Roebuck and Nevin were also present. The prize-winners were: Miss Stevens and Mr. Nevin, and the second prizes were, won by Miss M. Pearless and Mr. Roebuck. A Successful Concert. The Nelson Harmonic Society gave their third concert of the year in the School of Music on Thursday. The first part of the programme was a miscellaneous one; in the second part Villiers Stanford’s “Revenge” was performed. Miss A. Stevens sang the soprano solo in “Hear My Prayer’ (Mendelssohn), and Miss Lydia Dec sang Mascheroni’s “Ave Maria.” “The Soft Southern Breezes” (Barnby) was sung by Mr. E. Richards. Miss Stevens wore sea green with sequined tunic; Miss Lydia Dee wore white ninon over silk; Miss Judson acted as the accompanist. Some of those present : Miss Richmond. Miss Sutherland-Smith, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. and Miss Maginnity, Misses Ledger, Miss Lorimer; Mrs. Judson, Mrs. Allen, Miss Booth. Personal. Mr. J. Strachan, Surveyor-General, is at present visiting Nelson. Mrs. Harrison has returned from a lengthy stay in Christchurch. - Miss Menlove, who has been the guest of Mrs. Burnes, has returned to Dunedin. Mrs. Guy Ellis (Tadmor) is the guest of her mother (Mrs. Harris).. Miss Leita Jones (Napier) is visiting her- mother (Mrs. Charles Jones). Captain and Mrs. Carey have returned
to Wellington.
