PICTON.

July 28. Concert. The concert arranged by the young men members of fit. Paul’s (Presbyterian) Church was but poorly attended, owing to the prevailing bad weather. It was an essentially male affair, the only feminine portion of the show being a character dress in a duet, in which Mr H. Mclntosh looked exceedingly well, and his voice—a deep contralto—suite' the part to perfection. Interesting Lecture.

A most interesting lecture was given in Fays’ Hall on Saturday night by Mr Robert McNab, on the early history of New Zealand, and of Marlborough in particular. The audience was- not the largest ever seen in the hall, but in some measure the weather was responsible for the scant attendance, and those who went were fully repaid. Mr McNab is wort’ll going any distance to hear. The C.E.M.S. postponed their social on account of the weather, and several small Companies have had bad luck in small audiences through the incessant rain, and dirty state of the streets. Obituary.

Mr G. 11. Harris, who died at his residence in Kent-street on Tuesday, after a long illness, was greatly respected, and liked by all classes of the residents of the town and country. In his early years Mr Harris was an officer in the mercantile service, but came out to New Zealand and started sheep-farming in Pelorus Sound district. Later, on account of Mrs Harris’ illness, he came to reside in Pieton, leaving his sons to carry on farming operations. Mr Harris took an active part in local and general politics, and in sport of all kinds. He was Mayor of Picton during Queen Vio-

toria’s diamond jubilee year. Much sympathy is felt for his family in their bereavement. Social. The Wesleyans held a gathering in the Forester’s Hall on Tuesday evening. Songs and musical items by Mesdames Couch, >Sturmer, Atkins, Willet, Misses Stuart, Macalister, etc., etc., made up a successful programme. Personal. Mrs Whitehorn, whose husband, during ■his life was postmaster at Havelock, in this district, and later at Otaki, was in Pieton on Monday, and spent some time with her old friend, Mrs Allen. Miss Coates, Christchurch, is visiting her old school friend, Miss Belle Allen, in Pieton. Mr Claude Rowe, of the local Post Office, has been transferred to Westport for three months. Mr and Mrs Henry Harris, of Port Legar, Pelorus Sound, who have spent the winter months travelling about, are in Pieton again for a time.
