NELSON.

July 21. Mission Sale. The annual sale organised by Mrs. Hunter-Brown in aid of the funds of the Church Missionary Association was opened this week at the Diocesan Library. There was a. large attendance of the public, in spite of the wet weather. The articles exposed for sale comprised silver trinkets, lacquered toys, carved sandalwood and embroideries from India, carved trays and tables from Japan, silver trinkets from China, pottery from Belgium and England. The stallholders

were: Misses Paisley, Boor, Baker, Sealy, Leggatt and Kempthorne, and Mies Richmond was in charge of the afternoon tea, assisted by Misses Gibbs and Tomlinson. Among others present were: Mrs. Mules, Mrs. Richmond, Mrs. and Miss Glasgow, Mrs. E. J. Allen, Mrs. and Miss Edwards, Mrs. Kempthorne, Mrs. and Miss Gibbs, Mrs. Tomlinson, Mrs. Sealy, Mrs. Leggatt. Bridge. The final meeting of the Ladies’ Bridge Club was held at Mrs. Robison’s this week. Among others present were: Mrs. B. Harrison, Mrs. C. H. Coote, Mrs. Allen, Miss Roberts, Mrs. de Castro, Mrs. Robison, Miss Richmond, Mrs. Dodson. Old Boys' Dance. The annual dance of the Nelson College Old Boys’ Football Club will be held in the School of Music. The members of

the committee are: Mieses Hair, V. Bamford, F. Maginnity, Everett, Messrs. G. Richmond, McKay, Emerson, Topliss, Bisley and Batchelor. The Cook Memorial.

At the Theatre Royal a very enjoyable and interesting lecture was given by Mr. R. McNab (ex-Minister of Lands). The lecture was in aid of the Cook Memorial Fund, and it is proposed to place this memorial near Cook’s Straits, probably on Motuara Island, in sight of passing vessels. A Dance. The annual dance given in the School of Music by the Nelson College Old Boys’ Football Club was a great success in every respect. The supper tables were charmingly decorated with purple anemones, daffodils and violets. Among others present were: Mrs. Mark Grace, who wore sequined net over green charmeuse; Mrs. E. Moore, pretty froek of white chiffon over white satin; Mrs. C. King, white net over black silk; Mrs. E. Jackson,, mauve chiffon Empire gown; Miss Tomlinson, pale blue crepe de chine; Miss F. Maginnity, white chiffon; Miss Clark, buttercup taffeta; Miss Leggatt, black ninon; Miss D. Bell, red silk; Miss Houlker, black spotted lace; Misses Denshire (Ashburton), soft white satin; Miss E. Ledger, black silk net; Misses Coster, heliotrope chiffon taffeta; Miss E. Hair, white silk; Miss V. Bamford, white net over silk; Miss S. Clark, white chiffon with blue forget-me-nots; Miss Fearless (Wakefield), white satin with pearl embroideries; Messrs. Booth, Clark, G. Richmond, King, Wright, Baumgart, E. Jackson, Grace, Hair, Houlker, F. Hamilton, E. Moore. Bridge. An enjoyable bridge party was given by Mrs. Barclay Harrison. Some of those present were: Mrs. Heaps, Mr. and Mrs. Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Robison, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Broad, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler. Personal. Dr. Andrew has returned from Wellington. Hon. R. McNab has left for the West Coast. Mrs. C. Y. Fell and Miss Fell have returned from their visit to Wellington. The Rev. W. S. Lucas has returned from his visit to the South Sea Islands. Mrs. Lindo Levien (Napier) is the guest of Mrs. Fell. Mr. and Mrs. J. Greenfield have arrived from Blenheim.
