July 8. The Beasts’ Ball. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals should be substantially assisted by the proceeds of the "Beasts’ Ball.” It was an original idea that as many as possible attending the ball should represent some dumb friend. The result was striking. Special sets were formed, including “ Alice in Wonderland.” Mrs. Wenley’s representation of the “Cheshire Cat” was very elever. Mrs. IL Warren, in mouse-coloured plush, was a very perfect imitation of the doormouse. Miss S. Rutherford, as “Alice,” followed the “White Rabbit” (Mr. N. Wood), who was evidently attired for the Duchess's party, that lady being (most humorously represented by Mr. Snodgrass. Mr. W. E. Griffin, as the “ Lobster,” Mr. P. S. McLean as the “Mad Hatter,” and Mr. Gascoyne as the "March Hare” were all excellently carried out. The Insect Set made a very bright splash of colour. Butterflies were very popular, and from their gorgeous colourings had evidently come from tropical lands. They were represented by Sirs. Lowry, golden butterfly; Mrs. Beraan, white and silver butterfly; Sli-s Sandeinan, brown and yellow butterfly; Miss Beatrice MeLean, pink and silver butterfly; Mrs. R. D. MeLean. handsome gold and yellow bettie; Miss Dean, a wasp; Mrs. Levien, a ladybird; Mrs. Perry-, scarlet dragon fly. Amongst the men were Messrs. Lowry, R. D. D. MeLean, F. Ormond, Levien, and Troutbeek, wearing their coats turned back with the colour of their partner’s froek. A Pack of Cards was a very smart set, consisting of Mrs. Lusk, hearts; Mrs. S. Riddel, diamonds; Miss Lusk, spades; Miss Joan Duff, clubs; Messrs. T. Rome, Barron, Hindmarsh, and Riddel. During the evening a gavotto was daneed in a most stately fashion by Mrs. A. C. Russell, Mrs. A. J. Williams, Miss Taylor, Miss Margolionth and Miss Dinwiddle, the Messrs. Brewer Callendar, Hansard, Taylor, and Dinwiddle, all wearing old Court dresses and powdered hair. Tho competition for the best beast costume, which was decided by vote, resulted as follows:—Mr. Bowring, a white rooster, first; Mr. N. E. Griffin., the lobster, sec-

ond: Mr. Raven, a raven, third; Mrs. Wenley, Cheshire eat, fourth. Others present were: Mrs. Frank Nelson (French peasant), Mrs. Kettle, Mrs. Henley, Mrs. Vigor Brown, Mrs. Archie Brown, the Misses Brown, Mrs. Sandeman, Mrs. Ruddock, Miss Ruddock, Mrs. Hector Smith, Mrs. Hindmarsh, Mrs. Broard, Miss Hindmarsh (Spanish girl), Miss Ivers (Norwegian), Mrs. de Lisle, Miss White, Mrs. Nantes, Miss Pasley, Miss Retemeyer (black retriever), Miss Clark, Miss Smith (Pierrette), Mr. T. Smith (a duek), Mr. Douglas (a giraffe). Exhibition of Pictures. Lovers of pictures have this week had the privilege of viewing a collection of oil and water coloured sketches by Mr. Babbage. Mr. Babbage is a painter of the impressionist type. Amongst the sketches are several of the coast of Cornwall: one of the roost notable of the oil paintings is, perhaps, the Procession ol the Misericordia, Florence, representing a funeral procession at night. Several local sketches of the breakwater and Napier' hills have attracted much attention. Farewell Tea. Mrs McCarthy.
