PALMERSTON NORTH.

May 27. Memorial Services. A large concourse of people assembled in the Band Rotunda Reserve on last Friday afternoon, when observances in connection with the King's funeral took place. The- proceedings were most impressive and eloquent of the respect for the dead Monarch and sympathy with the widowed Queen-Mother and members of the Royal Family. Lord Flnnket's Farewell. On the following day his Excellency the Governor made, his final farewell speech from the Square rotunda. Arriving at Palmerston by special train from Wellington, the vice regal party were received at the station by the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) and the Borough Councillors, and driven to the Square rotunda, where

the citzens of Palmerston had assembled in large numbers to pay their parting ■tribute. Addresses were made by the Mayor and Mr. W. H. Collingwood (Town Clerk), to both of which his Excellency most suitably replied. Amongst those present were his Honor Mr. Justice Cooper and Mrs. Cooper, the Hon. D. Buddo (Minister of Internal Affairs), Mr. D. Buick, M.P., and Mrs. Buick, the Mayoress (Mrs. J. A. Nash), Mr. A. D< Thompson, S.M., and Mrs. Thompson, Archdeacon Harper, Revs. D. Hird and G. W. J. Spence, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Abraham, Drs. Wilson and Greig, Mr. and Airs. Essex, the members of the Borough and County Councils, and many other prominent citizens. The Savage Club. The members of the Savage Club entertained their lady friends to a korero on last Saturday night. A most' interesting programme was provided, including a weird haka, songs, and recitations, all of which were deservedly encored. During the evening the retiring Toa, Dr. Martin, invested his successor, Savage J. A. Nash, hanging round his neck a necklace

•f human teeth and placing in Ma hand the taiaha as insignia of his office. Davis, black velvet frock; Mrs. Putnam, soft cream silk; Mrs. Preeee, crimson cape worn over black evening dress; Miss Olive Preece, pale blue silk and lace; Miss Sheila Preece, black crepe de chine, with cream lace and touches of pale blue; Mrs. Peach, white satin with Maltese lace berthe, white fox furs; Mrs. Eliot, cream and pink striped silk, with cream lace insertion; Mrs. F. E. Watson, pale grey cape worn over black frock; Miss Watson pale blue silk Empire frock, pale ribbon threaded through hair; Mrs. A. N. Gibbons, black crepe de chine with touches of gold; Mrs. Dempsey, black velvet with chiffon frills on corsage, white coque feather boa; Miss Ethel Dempsey, cream silk and lace; Miss Marjory Barnieoat, white silk and lace, white Howers in her hair; Miss Sybil .Abraham, white net lace frock and pale blue silver sequined scarf; Miss O’Brien, grey silk with tunic of mauve chiffon, cluster of violets finishing corsage; Mrs. J. A. Nash, black laee robe over black silk, long pale grey coat; Mrs. H. Palmer, white chiffon taffeta embroidered in black; Mrs. Bennett, black velvet with cream lace berthe; Mrs. Gemmel, black satin, and pale blue cape with white swansdown-; Miss Gemmel, black crepe de chine, with pointed yoke of cream tucked net; Miss —. Gemmel, rose-col-oured velvet coat over frock of muslin and lace; Mrs. Kitchen, pale blue coat worn over cream silk frock; Miss K. Bell cream satin with touch of silver, smart crimson coat with black collar; Mrs. Sutcliffe, shell pink taffeta, the bodice veiled in gold threaded chiffon and finished with touches of black; Mrs. H. L. Young, cream chiffon over pink silk; Mrs. H. F. Gibbons, cream taffeta; Dr. and Mrs. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Gilchrist, Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Dane, Mr. and Mrs. Bendall, Miss Randolph, Miss Archer, Mrs. and Miss Holben, the Misses Glendinning, Mrs. Rankin, Miss Drew, and many others. Bridge. Mrs. Coombs, Featherston-street, entertained a few friends at bridge on Thursday night. Quantities of richlytinted chrysanthemums made a beautiful effect in the large drawrng-room. Mrs. Coombs wore a blaek, soft satin toilette finished with chiffon; Miss M. Coombs was in ereara; Mrs. Tripe, saxe blue chiffon taffeta; Mrs. Bell, black silk with black sequin trimming; Mr. and Mrs. D. Reed, Mrs. J. P. Inness, Mrs. Daniels and Mr. Graves Daniels, Miss M. Reed, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Collins, and a few others were there. Personal. Mrs. Morrah has returned from a short stay in Wellington. Mrs. J. Bell is in Wanganui for a few days. Mrs. Wilson (Wellington) is staying with Mrs. R. K. Reed. Mrs. Minto (Wanganui) is the guest of the Misses Glendinning.
