STRATFORD.

May 12» The Royal Proclamation. All social engagements have been postponed in consequence of the death of H.M. King Edward VII. Flags over the Post Office, school, municipal buildings, and hotels have been half-mast high. The reading of the proclamation, took place on Tuesday at noon, The cadets, in uniform, and public school children, were marched in front of the Poet Office steps, the cadets standing at attention, and awaiting the arrival of the Mayor and Councillors. All business men closed their premises at 11 a.m., and by noon a groat crowd had collected. At the conclusion of the proclamation, the ensign was hoisted to Hie masthead, and the "National Anthem” sung. , At Home. ~ ' f

On Saturday the Eltharn ladies’ hockey team came up, and played a match against cur local ladies, which resulted in a win for the visitors by three goals to one.

Mr. Hine, M.P., who is also captain of our one-time Mounted Corps, is doing his best to revive patriotic spirit amongst the youths of Stratford. No lees than 3<i recruits joined at the first meeting held in the Borough Council Chambers. Personal. Dr. Valentine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, was in Stratford for a few days this week. Mr. Hine, M.P., has left for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. W. Young are in Wellington in connection with the Masonic functions. Mr. and Mrs. Fookes have left for Wellington.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, Bank of Australia, have gone for a holiday to Wellington and Napier. Miss Grant (Dunedin) is at present visiting friends in Stratford.

Mr. L. Hammond has returned from New Plymouth.

Mrs. Raikes and family' have gone to Opunake for a short holiday. Mrs. Hogg, Mrs. Good, Mr. and. Mrs. Rennell, Dr. and Mrs. Paget, and Mr. Budge were amongst those who went to the Hawera races.

Miss Bedford (New Plymouth) had a long evening on Friday, which was a great success. Miss Nancy James was in white; Miss Nellie James, Mr. and Mrs. Heatty, Miss Joyce Monroe, Miss Glynes, Mr. T. James, etc.
