PALMERSTON NORTH.

March 24. Tennis Tournament. A beautiful morning, followed by a showery afternoon, was the fate of the last day of the tennis tournament. The Wellington players, with two exceptions, won all the finals. The exceptions were the Ladies’ Championship Singles, which was won by Miss Hartgill (of Dannevirke), after a long brilliant game with Mrs. Payne (an ex-champion from Taranaki) ; and the Men’s Handicap Doubles, won by Messrs. Wither and Dick Waldegrave (of Palmerston). This match was our only win, although Mr. Stedman got into the final of the Men’s Championship Singles and Messrs. Adams and Stedman were the runners-up for the Championship Doubles. Mr. Rupert Reed, a

very young player, also of Palmerston, met Mr. Fisher (of Wellington) in the final of the Men’s Handicap Singles. The Men’s Championship Singles was won by Prouse (of Wellington). Fisher and Prouse (of Wellington) won the Championship Doubles, Prouse and Miss Simpson the Combined Handicap Doubles’, Fisher and Miss Hartgill the Combined Championship Doubles. The Ladies/ Championship Doubles was a win for Miss Simpson (of Wellington) and Miss Namy Wilson (of Bulls), after a keen game with Mrs. H. N. Watson (Palmerston) and Miss Hartgill (Dannevirke). Amongst the onlookers I noticed Mrs. J. G.
