Despite the rather overcast weather there was a remarkably large and fashionable gathering at the opening of the lawn tennis season at the West End Club’s ground oa

Saturday. The president ot the Chib (Mr C. J. Parr), in declaring the season open, eaid that was the eighth consecutive occasion on which he bad bad the privilege of doing so. The past history of the club was a gratifying one. Last season the club won the championship banner for the city, and also the gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles championships for the district. He trusted that they would be equally successful during the present season, and that at the end he ■would again be in a position to congratulate the ctub upon its achievements. During tlie afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, and a considerable number of friendly game were played. Eden and Epsom. The Eden and Epsom Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon. The lawns were in splendid order, reflecting great credit on the groundsman and the committee. The courts were formally opened for the season by the president, Mr. Dawcon, who referred to the coming N.Z. Association tournament, to be held at the lawns in December. The new pavilion is to be started almost immediately, and with the grandstand, to be erected along the north side of the courts, should afford ample accommodation for the many visitors expected at the tournament. A number of members from other clubs took part in the play, and except for the fact that rain came on about 4.30, the afternoon was very enjoyably spent. N.Z. Lawn Tennis Association. The annual meeting of the New Zealand laiwn Tennis Association was held on Friday. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Lord Plunket ; president, Mr. W. R. Holmes (Auckland) ; vice-presidents. Messrs. H. R. Cooke (Auckland), W. Goss (Canterbury), F. Logan (Napier), C. J. W. Griffiths (Blenheim), C. H. Broad (Nelson), R. 8. Black (Otago), Dr. Leatham (Taranaki), H. M. Gor (Wellington), Dr. Teichelman (West Coast) ; management committee, Professor Hunter, Messrs. F. Laishley, J. C. Peacock, A. Young, G. A. Harley, R. W. K. Swanston. E. Salmond : New Zealand appeal committee, Messrs. E. J. Ross, P. A. Laurie, F. Wilding, A. F. Wright, W. Goss; hon. auditor, Mr. L. G. Mackay; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. N.* Goldie. Mr. Goldie was voted ten guineas for his service as secretary during the past year.
