March 12. The Races, The Wanganui Jockey Club were again very fortunate in the weather for their second day’s racing on Saturday, 6th. The attendance was good and many very smart toilettes were worn. Amongst those I noticed were Mrs Turnbull (Wellington) in a becoming pale heliotrope and cream striped ninon, the skirt made with bands-of cream insertion with the same on the bodice; sash and ends tied at the side of soft heliotrope silk with piping of emerald green, large pale heliotrope hat with ■wealth of heliotrope hydrangea; Mrs Holmes (Wairarapa), eream cloth coat and skirt, cream vest, black hat with white silk swathed round it and large rosette of same at the side; Miss Goring (Rangitikei), wore an embroidered white linen frock, large black straw hat with black velvet ribbon in loops round St; Mrs Heppel (New Plymouth), white •muslin gown with wide band of embroidery at the foot, shoulder scarf of pale blue silk, Tuscan straw hat with white roses, foliage and rosette of silk; Mrs A. Moore (Wairarapa), wore a beautiful black lace robe over white •silk, the bodice made with cream net and lace vest edged with pale heliotrope velvet, cream straw hat with large heliotrope roses veiled in black lace; Miss Moore (Wairarapa), cream voile skirt with glace silk in bands on it, pretty eream net and lace blouse, her hat was a large flat one with wreath of pink and heliotrope roses on it; Mrs A. Fitzherbert (Feilding), wore a cream eolienne gown with silk lace and insertion on the bodice and trellis work of narrow green velvet, black picture haf with black chiffon, jet ornaments and black plumes; Mrs Monkton (Rangitikei) wore a pale blue voile frock with bands of wide cream insertion, and vest of same with elbow sleeves having a frill of cream lace, cream straw hat with pink roses and white ostrich feather; Miss Gaisford (Hawke’s Bay), old rose shaded silk gown made in Empire style with cream net vest, fancy straw hat with wreath of shaded roses and foliage; Miss Durie (Wellington), pale, blue gown with net and laee, black hat with blue silk swathed on it and shaded Wings; Mrs Bull (Rangitikei), cream eolienne gown with vest of net and lace, black crinoline straw hat with Black chiffon and ostrich plumes; Mrs Harrison, smart grey striped tweed coat and skirt, cream vest, black velvet hat with crown of black glace silk and black quill wings; Miss Higgle, pale grey

striped mu-lin frock with bands of insertion on the shoulder straps and vest of the same, black and white hat with wings; Mrs Moore, fawn voile costume with vest of cream net and lace outlined with Oriental shaded silk, the same ribbons forming sash edge and edged with cream motifs, fawn fancy straw hat with fawn flowers and tulle; Miss Moore white embroidered muslin frock, becoming large blaek and white silk hat, with ostrich plumes; Mrs Fairbairn, white embroidered linen gown, blaek crinoline straw hat with tulle swathed round it and ostrich tips; Miss Wilford, white muslin frock with bauds of fine cream insertion on the skirt and the same on the bodice with inserted motifs, smart apple-green crinoline straw toque with wreath of forget-me-nots and pink rose at the back; Mrs Hawke.pale heliotrope xhi,fl’on taffetas gown Willi vest of tucked net and Honiton lace on the bodice black straw hat with chiffon and ostrich tips; Mrs Cameron, green silk gown with cream medallions on the bodice, green hat with flowers and tulle; Mrs. Krull wore a handsome gown of brown crepe de chine with cream net vest, and cream and pale blue shaded silk flower embroidery, brown tulle bonnet with aigrette at the side; Miss Krull wore a white muslin frock, with blaek embroidered spot on it, and bands of white insertion on the skirt, with vest of the same, with touches of pale blue silk, cream straw hat with black tulle ruche and aigrette: Mrs. H. Stewart (Feilding), pale green lustre Eton coat and skirt, with cream vest, blaek hat with black silk and wreath of large pink roses; . Mrs. F. Moore, black moire coat and skirt, the coat had a collar of black silk embroidery, pastel blue crinoline straw hat, with tulle and flowers; Mrs. Broad (Marton), cream muslin, with tiny blue embroidered spot, cream hat with golden brown wings; Sirs. Barthorpe (Silverhope), white embroidered linen gown, becoming heliotrope silk hat with heliotrope tulle swathed round it; Miss Wa-rd (Silverhope), blue striped gown with square yoke, brown silk hat with blue and brown figured scarf swathed round it; Mrs. R. Jackson, pale green and cream striped voile costume, with bands of cream insertion and vest of the same, cream and brown straw toque, with large brown feather, pom-pom at the side: Mrs. H. Jackson, smart prune cloth coat and skirt,- with blaek military braid, cream vest, emerald green velvet toque with prune wings; Mrs. Saunders, pretty pale pink floral muslin, with shoulderstraps edged with pink silk, and blaek velvet belt, blaek straw hat with tulle and ostrich feathers; Mrs. G. Saunders wore a becoming frock of pale grey crepe de. chine, with cream net vest, large heliotrope hat with tulle swathed round it, and a bunch of shaded violets at the side; Miss Imlay, grey and blaek figured silk muslin with wide band of blaek velvet on the skirt, and cream insertion, vest of net and lace, blaek crinoline straw hat with white erown and ostrich tips; Mrs. Cotterill (Napier), pale green gown with lace yoke and tucked tulle, having touch of pale blue in it, blue straw hat with tulle and flowers; Mrs. Clay, pale blue ami white striped chiffon taffetas, made in Empire style, with black silk sash' and ends, black hat with erown of narrow frills of Valenciennes laee and wings; Mrs. A. Lewis, green tweed coat and skirt, cream vest, black beaver hat with tulle and flat wings; Mrs. Riddell (Napier), reseda green frieze eoat and skirt, with black military braid and large buttons, black hat with tulle and ostrich tips; Mrs. Hatherly, cream eolienne, with vest of lace, and quiltings of eream glace silk, old rose straw hat, with flowers to match; Mrs. Barthorpe (Pahiatua) wore a smart green striped tweed coat and skirt, cream vest, pastel blue straw hat with flowers and tulle; Mrs. Pearson (Hutt), becoming electric-blue striped tweed coat and skirt, brown straw hat with brown daisies in it; Mrs. Good, pale old rose chiffon taffetas, with Limerick lace on the bodice, black straw hat with tulle and long ostrich plumes; Mrs. Peel, sky-blue Shantung silk gown, with shoulder straps and vest of tucked net, cream straw hat with tulle and ostrich plumes; Miss Cowper, becoming pale grey crepe de chine, with beautiful cream laee on the bodice, black picture hat with tulle and’ plumes; Miss Todd, very smart green and blaek striped tweed coat and skirt with black military braid on it, large black hat with blaek chiffon swathed on it, and emerald green wings at the aides; her sister wore a similar coat and skirt in navy blue, pretty blue hat with pole blue scarf swathed round it; Miss Barton, pale apple green eilk frock with baud of velvet, a darker

shade at the foot, and touches of the same in tlie bodice, hat with green silk on it; Mrs. JI. Nixon, emerald green cloth, Directoire coat and skirt, with black military braid. large Wack hat with brown shaded eilk swathed round it; Miss Nixon wore a nattier blue eolienne made in Empire style with black glace silk sash and belt with the ends coining down the side, black hat with blue silk searf; Mrs. H. Lethbridge, green strijied tweed coat and ekirt with collar and wide turned back cuffs of emerald green velvet, green straw hat with tulle and ribbons: Mrs. Sorley, black and white striped gown with vest of tucked cream net, and tiny waisteoat effect of emerald green, black and white straw toque with waving cream aigrette at the side; Mrs. Chapman (Wellington), black and white striped voile with black Valenciennes insertion forming Vandykes on the skirt, and the same on the bodice, blue straw hat with foliage and green gauze; Miss Chapman (Wellington) wore a pretty white muslin frock with insertion and lace, black straw hat with tulle and ostrich plumes; Mrs. James Watt, pale pink check muslin frock with tucked vest and Honiton lace on the bodice, large pink hat with tulle the same shade swathed round it: Miss Cameron, brown and cream striped voile gown, brown silk coat and brown hat with wreath of Howers. Flower Show. The Wanganui Horticultural Society held a two days’ show last week in the Drill Hall. Owing probably to the dry weather, the show was not up to its usual standard. Amongst those present were:—Mrs. and Miss Wilford, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Krull, Mr. and Mrs. Babbage, Mrs. Treadwell, Mr. and Mrs. Bayley, Dr. and Mrs. Earle, Mrs. O. Lewis, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Janisch, Mrs. Couper, Miss Alexander, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, Mies Anderson, Mrs. Christie. Mrs. Sargeant, Mrs. Stewart. Mrs. Chamberlain. Mrs. Jones, Miss Cameron, Mrs. Palmer, Miss —. Cameron. Circus. Wirths’ Circus had a one night’s season in Wanganui this week. The performance was one of the best of its kind that has ever visited Wanganui. Amongst the audience were:- —Mrs. and Miss Nixon, Mr. and Mrs. H. Lethbridge, Mrs. Sorley, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, Mr. P. Mrs. Heywood, of Hamilton, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Meldrum, in Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. Ileppel, of New Plymouth, have been staying in Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. Monkton. of Rangitikei, have been staying in Wanganui recently. Mrs. Broad, of Marton, is staying in Wanganui with her mother, Mrs. F. Moore. Mrs. John Watt, of Wanganui, is visiting relations in Palmerston North. Mr. and Mrs. Cotterill, of Napier, are staying in Wanganui with Mr. and Mrs. G. Saunders. Mr. and Mrs. Waterson, of Whakatane, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. D. Lethbridge, Turakfna, Wanganui. Mrs. Stewart, of Wanganui, left this week for a visit to Rev. W. and Mrs. Bond, in the Wairarapa. Mrs. Sargeant, of Wanganui, is visiting relations and friends in Christchurch and Oamaru. Mrs. Janisch, of Wanganui, leff this week for a visit to friends in Tauranga. Mr. and Mrs. A. Allison, of Wanganui, left this week for a holiday in Auckland and Rotorua.
