Remodelling Oxford.
The Bishop of Birmingham made some striking remarks on the need for the reform of the University of Oxford, at a conference of 300 delegates from workingclsas organisations at Toynbee Hall. 41 The people who do not show at once that they want to be students should be asked to go elsewhere,” he declared. “A rearrangement of endowments is necessary in order that they may once more be made applicable to the ends for which they are intended—the education of those who desire to be students and have not the means. 4 Then again, there will have to be a remodelling of the whole scale and standard of living at Oxford.”
