AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, April 20. Saturday, the first day of the Easter Race Meeting, was really rather disappointing. 'There were very few people one. knew, and, as usual at the between season’s meetings, some people wore summery toilettes, while others were gowned for winter winds' nnd showers. Lady Plunket did not venture out to Ellerslie, but his Excellency, accompanied by Captain Lyony and Mr. Waterfield, motored out. I expect 1 shall have far more to tell you about Monday’s races, that is to say, if the weather is at all propitious. Now to describe a few gowns 1 particularly noticed. Mrs. George Bloomfield was charmingly gowned in a lovely shade of old rose ninon voile over glace, with V-shaped vest of cream net and lace, outlined with narrow bands of old rose silk, black hat with black and white ospreys and ostrich feathers; Mrs. Wilfrid Col beck wore a dainty toilette of ivory striped eolienne, and a most becoming pale blue picture hat with shaded feathers; Mrs. Fred Waller, smart little gathered bolero and skirt of violet face cloth with cream vest, brown fur and violet toque; Miss Williams was strikingly gowned in a cream ninon skirt and a black and white striped silk Eton coat faced with pale blue, picture hat with ostrich plumes; Miss Gorrie, pretty blue-grey toilette, with small hat finished with clusters of shaded emu feathers; Miss Gwen Gorrie, dainty pale blue gown with cream net guinipe and sleeves, picture hat; Miss Rachel Gorrie wore a beautifully fitting brown tweed tailormade, and a pretty brown and green hat; Miss Muir Douglas, navy cloth Eton costume and brown hat; Eady Lockhart, black chiffon taffeta, the cream vest outlined with touches of pale blue and gold, small hat to match; Mrs. T. Southey Baker, black silk, and a black and white hat; Mrs. Hamley, smart brown and biscuit-coloured striped chiffon taffeta, toned with lovely lace and brown velvet, picture hat to match, crowned with drooping Bird of Paradise plumes; Mrs. Collins was strikingly gowned in a brown and red striped tweed taitor-made, with bands of brown silk military braid, brown fur toque with Ted velvet crown; Mrs. Wallace Lawson, dark green face cloth coat and skirt, bat wreathed with pink shaded roses; Airs A. Southey Baker wore a graceful gown of elephant grey ninon, with cream yoke, becoming hat to match with bird of Paradise plumes; Miss Lloyd was very effectively gowned in a crushed strawberry chiffon, with smart hat a shade darker wreathed with roses, and ostrich feather stole to match; Mrs W. Lloyd, white cloth gown and blue hat; Miss Satchel I (England) was beautifully gowned in white crepe de ejiine, white hat. with long ostrich feathers and band of gold embroidery, white fox furs; Miss Spicer, crimson cloth sac coat and skirt, hat cn suite; Mrs Hartland, pretty brown silk toilette, with cream vest, cream hat with pink roses; Mrs Ballin, cream cloth gown with stone marten furs, violet ami fur toque; Miss Ballin. heliotrope frieze costume, with shaded heliotrope and violet toque; Mrs Alison was gowned in reseda green,.with smart little black Eton jacket ; Mrs Ewen Alison, dainty grey gown with lace guinipe, toned with touches of black, grey hat ; Mrs Ranson, navy blue cloth costume, and hat to correspond; Mis R. B. Lusk, smart green cloth tailor-math*, small white felt hat with green wings and green velvet; Miss .Ivan Lusk ( Dunedin), pretty white hailshower muslin, with Irish lata* bolero, white hat with touches of black; Mrs Devore, handsome black silk, and pretty little gold and blaek bonnet; Miss B. Devon*, pretty blue costume, white hat garlanded with pink roue*; Miss Jean Martin (Adelaide) was very prettily trucked in heliotrope eolienne. with touches of velvet a shade darker, biscuit picture hat with waving self-coloured ostrieli feathers; Mrs Davis, pale blue and heliotrope floral silk, black and

white hat; Mrs Owen, smart tailor-made gown, with small black and white hat; Mrs Herz, pretty floral ninon, white and black hat; Miss Tole was daintily attired in white inserted muslin, pretty Tuscan and black hat wreathed with hydrangea blue roses; Miss Cotter, nattier blue costume toned with white, smart blue and green hat; Miss Stevenson, dark heather mixture tweed coat and skirt, small bronze and green hat; Mrs Angus Gordon, black and white check tweed costume, black and white hat.
