GISBORNE.

Dear Bee, April 17. The local oarsmen had an ideal day for THE FINISH OF THE ROWING SEASON REGATTA on Saturday last. A large number of people sought the recreation lawns bordering the river bank to witness the rowing, the vivid green of the grass showing up in fine contrast the gay colours of the ladies’ gowns and parasols. On the river itself motor launches and rowing boats decorated with bunting conveyed numerous spectators up and down the course. Three four-oared races were held between the two local clubs, Poverty Bay and Gisborne, the Poverty Bay winning two out of three of the events; but the chief attraction was a sculling exhibition by Webb, the world’s champion. The beautiful style and great strength of the champion were much admired, the light boat gliding softly along the water with scarcely any apparent effort. The graceful movements of the sculler, together with the beauty of the river, river banks, and sunshine, formed a picture that would leave a lasting impression in the minds of the spectators. TENNIS. An Open Tournament, together with a match with Dannevirke, are to be played on the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Courts this Easter, play having started to-day. To-morrow a committee of ladies are giving a small dance in Whinray’s hall in honour of the Dannevirke team. I shall give you a description of that next week. SOME PURELY PERSONAL ITEMS.
