AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, Jan. 8. RACES ON NEW YEAR’S DAY. Unfortunately for the raee-going people, the weather for the last two days* raSng can only be described as fiendish. It rained the whole time on New Year’s Day and was so fearfully hot that everybody seemed quite limp. However, everyone remained quite cheerful, and as most people had come prepared they wandered round as usual and enjoyed themselves fairly well on the whole. The racing and attendance were particularly good and some of the finishes were unusually exciting. Though rain coats were the order of the day, some of the braver ones wore pretty costumes, a few of which I give below:—Mrs W. R. Bloomfield looked charming in a black chiffon taffeta with a white laee vest and a becoming black hat; Mrs But hie wore a white doth tailor-made

costume and a Tuscan hat with a shaded blue feather; Miss Gorrie, pretty pale grey summer tweed faced with green, white vest, and a green tulle swathed hat; Miss Gwen Gorrie, white cloth costume with a becoming heliotrope hat; Airs L. BROUGH-FUEMMING COMPANY. It goes without saying that the audiences at His Majesty’s 'Theatre are large and brilliant, ami that the Brough-Flem-ming Comedy Company are enthusiastically received each night. All were delighted to welcome back our favourite, Mrs. Brough, who looked exceedingly well well, and acted with all her old animation and eharm. The dresses worn in “Mrs. Carriage's Necklace” were very pretty and effective. Mrs. Brough wore a cerise velvet gown in the opening scene, made with a gathered skirt into the waist, and cream lace entredeux. Her second was a pale blue satin tea gown with blaek lace insertions, and she wore a petunia silk encrusted with black applique in the last act. Miss Beatrice Day was charmingly gowned in a beautiful white net evening frock covered with opalescent bugles, and wreaths of tiny pink roses festooned round decolletage. Her other dresses were a lemon silk and a pretty pale blue cashmere house gown with bodiee cut to form bolero effect over a white Irish lace full blouse. Miss Kate Gair looked very dainty in a pale heliotrope net evening frock with a deeper tone on tire corsage. and she also wore a soft white mousseline with small frills on the skirt. In the audience on Friday night I noticed Mrs. Mct ’osh Clark in a blaek chantilly lace evening gown; Mrs. Hope Lewis, white point d'esprit evening toilette; Miss Fenton, white silk with silk yak yaee on decoUetage; Miss Nora Goreie. primrose silk, with lovely Brussels lace berthe; Miss Blamlie Gorrie, pale blue silk and white Josephine scarf; Mi’s. W. R. Boomfield, white silk and blaek lace evening frock; Mrs. H. Lloyd Brett, rose pink figured silk, with cream lace yoke; Mrs. Monckton, pale pink silk and cream lace berthe; Mrs. Walker, blaek taffetas with cream lace entredeux; Miss Florence Walker, white silk evening frock; Mrs. I. Alexander, blaek taffetas; Mrs. A. M. Ferguson, white broderie Anglaise; Mrs. Gamble, blaek crepe de chine with cream lace insertion; Mrs. Ranson, cream crepe evening gown; Mrs. A.
