HAWERA.

Dear Bee, October 19. The new women’s ward at the Hawera Hospital was opened last Monday. Mr. J. A\. Scott, chairman of the Hospital Hoard, performed the opening ceremony, and gave a long address, in which ha spoke of the progress of the hospital since its opening, and also of the many improvements that have been made. The mw ward is a derided improvement. It holds 12 beds, and is plastered throughout. Each compartment is secluded by hangings of white, which adds greatly to the privacy of the compartments, as ■well as gives a cosy appearance to the ward. ] believe this is the first ward in the colony in which this idea has been introduced. An endless amount of trouble had been gone to in the way of decorations, the corridor, entrance hall, ami wards looking charming. Their decorations were Hower-, arum lilies, ami quantities of lycopodium. While afternoon tea was being partaken of. a delightful musical programme was gone through, items being given as follows: ‘’Duet. “Venetian Song.** Misses B. amt K. Flynn; song. ‘‘Spring.’* Mi-s B. Flynn; pianoforte solo. Mr. Ix*o. Whittaker; song. ‘‘The King’s Minstrel.” Mr. L. T. Brown; song, “Garden of Sleep. Mrs. O’Callaghan: song. “The C harge of the Light Brigade.” Mr. Scott; song. “Home Love,” Miss Reilly. Amongst those present ewer: Miss Dunsford (matron), who received in her white uniform, and was ably assisted by the nurses, who wore pale blue uniforms and white caps; Mrs. .1. \V. A delightful afternoon was spent, a ini everyone enjoyed the fun immensely, it being the first - Town Tea” held in Hawera. The prizes were a silver and cut glass vase and a cut glass scent bottle, one prize bring for the lady who guessed the greatest number of towns, and the other tor the be-t design. Miss McLean and Mrs. Merk tied for the first-men-tioned one, the former eventually wining it. and Miss Young and Miss Worlall tied for the other, the latter lady being successful after drawing.
