MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee. .' Octoter 12. THE EXHIBITION BALL, held on Friday evening. was not the suceeiss which the committee, who had worked exceedingly hard in arranging matters, anticipated. All the rooms, cleared of exhibits, had been decorated, dressing-rooms fitted up, supper provided on an elaborate scale. music of the best, and an excellent programme provided but alas! the exhibition itself, two days’ races. and perhaps two important shows looming in the near future, spoilt the ball as far as attendance was concerned, less than fifty people being present. THE CHILDRENS FANCY DRESS BALL on Saturday evening was much more appreciated, and as prizes were given for the best fancy dresses tbe parents naturally took more interest in the affair. The prize donated by Mr C. .1. Griffiths the most original costume was wen bv Master .holm Corry, who rcmesented "The Marlborough impress:” The. prize was a writing case. The second piize, donated by Mr F. Grady (Wellington), was a toilet ease, and fell to Miss Alison Corry, who represented the "Marlborongji A. and P. Association.” The third prize, a purse, donated by Mr R. McCallum, went to Miss Effie Smale, who was "The Exhibition;’’ fourth prize to Miss K. Seott-Smilh, "Gipsy;” fifth to Miss Pearl McKay, “Fairy;” and sixth to Miss M. McCallum, "Kate Greenaway.” Mr W. Pollard's guinea prize for the youngest and best dancer was voted to Miss Betlia Edwards. When the children's programme was ended I he grownup-. spent an enjoyable hour or i wo. It never rains but it pours, so of course v. e must have THE RACES just when all our pockets were empty, and we were feeling inclined for a slow week, just to recover from the exertions of going to the exhibition twite or tlniec i; day for a fortnight. The races were as usual, only the attendance was scan' compared to other occasions. A SOCIAL was held at Okaramio on Tuesday last. During his drive through the country to Havelock recently Lord Phmket and suite visited the Okaramio school, and asked for a holiday for 'Hie children. The holiday wah granted on Tuesday, and the’ children had a high old lime with tea. games, etc., in the afternoon, and a dance in the evening. During the

afternoon Mieses S. Hart and K. Cameron, on behalf of the children, presented Mr and Mrs Hill, who have been promoted to Canvastoun school, with an armchair and travelling-rug. Cheers were given for Lord ami Lady Plunket. and also for the departing teacher and his wife.
