CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, May 25. THE CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB must be congratulated on the success of the dance given by them last Thursday evening in the Art Gallery. It is an annual dance, and always popular, but this time it simply ‘'boomed.” and. I was told they had to stop the sale of tickets. Airs. Norman Macbeth was hostess for the occasion, and right well did she perform her duties in looking after her numerous young friends. The large room was divided into supper room and lounge, and the decorations were most effective; while floor, music (supplied by Aliss Scrivenor’s band), and the supper were all excellent. Airs. Alacbeth wore black satin gown, finished with lace. Among those present were Air. and Mrs. Henry Wood, Air. and Mrs. F. W. Hobbs, Mr. and Airs. Middleton. Air. and Airs. Curtis. Airs, and Aliss Alodlin, Air- and Miss Stead, Air. and Alisses Moir (2), Air. and Miss Alilsom, Air. and Airs. Botliamley, Airs, and Miss Hartland, Air. and Airs. Robertson, Dr. and Mrs. Farr, Air. and Airs. Fisher, Air. and Mrs. Evans, the Misses Denniston, Hill-Fisher, Graham, Alacbeth, Runciman (Auckland). Cholntondeley, Raine, Louisson (2), Harris (2), McOwen (2), Francis, Brett (2). Russell, Jameson (2), Gossett, Morris, Kohn, Way, Cracroft-Wilson, Guthrie, Earl (Oamaru), Selby, Kiver, Hislop (Dunedin), Airs, and Aliss Symes, Air- and Alisses Mackenzie (2), Alessrs. Hawkins, Comerford. Van Asch (2), Bolton, Blunden. Ronaldson. Staveley, Currie, Hobbs, Appleby, Guthrie, and numbers more, over two hundred being present. A AIOST ENJOYABLE LITTLE DANCE was given by Mrs. Burns for young people at her residence, Chester-street, on Friday evening, when, with good music, excellent floor, and dainty supper, every one was sorry when it was time to go home. Airs. Burns wore a black satin evening gown, with spray of crimson

flowers on the bodice. The Misses Burns were in white frocks finished witli lace, relieved with pale blue. Others present were the Misses Julius (2). Stead, Wilding, Mills, K. Preston. Babington, Molineaux, Hill, Cox, Moore, Anderson, Bourne, Wood, Thomas, Messrs. SJead, Harper, Babington. Wood, Anderson, Lawrence, Palmer, Mlils. Wilding, Loughnan, Curnow, Cox, Preston (2), Bourne, Moore, etc. Airs. W. Reece gave A SMALL DANCE for her daughter, Miss Irene Reece, and her young friends at ‘•'Norholme,” Bealey Avenue, which was greatly enjoyed by all. Among those present were the Misses Wilding, Devenish Alcares (2), Martin, Prins (3), Anderson (2), Fell, Burns (2), Elinslie, Cecil-Jones (Wellington), Bloxam, Bassett. Thompson (2), Kitson, Merton, Wood (2), Parsons, Messrs- Wood, Loughnan. Burns, Greenwood, Anderson, Deacon, Ferguson, Tonks, Jameson, Martin, Holderness, Merton, Bevan Brown. Mrs. Merton also gave a young people’s dance last week, which passed o-ff most successfully. It was with very great regret the announcement of the break down in Bishop Julius’ health was received by a large section of Christchurch residents. It has been feared for sonic months he was over-doing it. and in spite of many persuasions only snatched very short holidays. He has now very reluctantly had to give in. and, with Airs. Julius, leaves for England in the Tongariro the second week in June. Bishop Julius, accompanied by Miss Julius, has gone to Port Chalmers in the Tongariro, and will only be back in Christchurch for a short time before finally sailing. The Bishop and Airs. Julius expect to be back about October. Invitations are out for an “At Home” to be given in the Alexandra Hall by the captains and officers of the Discovery and Alorning, which is sure to be well attended, though one regretfully thinks their time with us is getting very short now, as they are to sail the first week in June.

DOLLY VALE.
