HAWERA.

Dear Bee, May t). VVc Itad such splendid weather Inst Wednesday -..nd Thursday for the two race days of the Egniont Winter Meeting. The sun shone gloriously, and there was just the ■ lightest of breezes to keep the air fresh and exhilarating. Everything looked wellkept. and green, and the course could not have liven in better order. The club is to be congratulated on its new grandstand. which is a boon to everybody, as well as a great improvement on the old one. The racing was very fair, although the dividends were not very large on

either .day. There, was a good atteqdanee of people on lioth days, although, of course, not as many as, attend the February meeting. Amongst ?ome of the ladies present I noticed: Mrs R. H. Miss Glenn (Manaia), Miss Brewer, Miss Day, Miss Espagne, Mrs Stevens, Airs Ixivell, Mrs O’Callaghan, Mrs Baird. Mrs Tonks, Misses Caplen (2), Mrs Foyster. Misses Brett (2), Thomas. C'outts, Nolan.

Last Tuesday night Misses Brewer and Cuttield held the first of their ANNUAL ASSEMBLIES in the Theatre Royal. They are to be congratulated on its success, as it was one of the most enjoyable small dances we have had for some time. The floor, of which they were rather afraid, was very good, and the music supplied by the Misses Flynn (2), piano and violin, and their brother (cornet), was all that could be desired. The supper was tastefully laid out at the back of the stage, and the hall very prettily decorated. The dance was only, kept up until one o’clock, which was very wise, I think, the races being the next day. Miss Brewer wore a very pretty dress of pink silk; Miss Cutfifld, a flowered delaine; Mrs. Nolan, black silk; Mis. Hogg, handsome cream satin dress, 1 rimmed with pink roses; Mrs. Lovell, black silk, white trimmings; Mrs. Jacob, yellow corded silk, the body covered with blaek net and ribbon; Miss Williams. blaek satin, deep berthe of lace on body; Miss Brett, white tucked muslin, inserted with lace, the body, trimmed with violets; Mias V.'Brett, white tucked silk, ehiffon trimmings; Miss Nolan, black dress, very hand.somc pale blue crepe de chine coat, i rimmed with Maltese lace; Miss Russell, black dress, relieved with red flowers; Miss Espagne, sky blue velvet, silver trimmings; Miss Greville; Miss Grieves; Miss Winks; Miss Baird, white silk, turquoise blue velvet’and, chou; Miss P. Baird, white tucked silk, trimmed with chiffon; ’ Miss McLean, cream brocade, trimmed with red Uqw-

ers: Miss Price; Miss Jackson; Missea Hamilton (2), (Manutrhi) ; Miss Douglas. black satin: Miss Day: Miss Riddle (Xormanby), white book muslin. trijnmed with black l>ebe ribbon. Among the gentlemen were Messrs. Anderson, Parkinson, • Gibson, Gleen, Parrington. Watson, Fraser. Hamilton (2) (Mantitalii), Liddle, Norton, Triman, Greville, It. Lysaght, Moore, McLean, Riddle (Noiinanby). Tonks. Douglas, Cooper, Mitchell (Majnaia), Lovell, Gordon. THE GIRLS’ HUAKI HOCKEY CLUB is in full swing now, am’ promises to be just as successful this year as last, I think the team’s trip to Wellington last winter has helped to make the players more eager than they have ever been. The Wellington tournament gives them something to practise for, aud also something to look forward to. There are 13 new members, which clearly shows that the club is not going down at all The colours have been changed to alt navy blue dresses and pale blue ties Last year they had navy blue and white. Miss' Queenie Glenn, one of the best players in the team, will not be able to play in the Huaki team this year, as she has gone to the Wanganui College. She will be missed very much—but we must remember that Hawera’s loss is Wanganui’s gain. THE PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE CLUB has started again this winter, and the first evening, which was held at Mrs. Alexander’s, South-road, last Friday, week, distinctly showed that they are to be just as enjoyable this winter as last. The next one is to be held on Friday night at Mrs. (Dr.) Westenra’s. They are held fortnightly at different houses. Next Wednesday night there is to be a large ball given in the Opera House by the Hawera ladies. From all accounts it is going to be a very large, as well as a delightful, one, and everyone is looking forward to it. Mesdames Alexander, McLean, Coutts, Koch, and Baird are the committee, and Misses Caplen and Dingle the secretaries. I must say, although Hawera is called dull, there are always a lot of dances for one to go to,'and such nice ones, too. I have heard of several more coming

off quite soon.
