Dear Bee, October 14. The Christchurch Liedertafel gave ns a chaiming evening last Thursday AT A GEMISCHTER ABEND. This was their hundredth concert. The Choral Hall was well filled, and the decorations, always a feature at those gatherings, were unusually beautiful, such a wealth of the narcissi tribe being available, and some lovely clumps of arum lilies were most effective. A few of the first members of the Liedertafel were present. They have been working members since its inception eighteen years ago. when the late Mr. W. G. Rhind was president, and Mr. A. J. Towsey conductor. Mr. T. Barnett has been hon. secretary, treasurer and librarian for all those years, and during the interval the members took this opportunity to make him a presentation in recognition of his valuable services to the society. Mr. W. Izard (president) made the presentation, which consisted of a gold watch-chain, a sovereign ease and match-box. Mr. A. Appleby appeared among the soloists, and sang a pretty song, "The Daily Question.” remarkably well, considering he was in his prime at the founding of the Liedertafel. The other soloists were: Messrs. F. Barkas, P. Hockley. B. S. Collier, A. W. Bowring and A. Millar. Mr. F. M. Wallace conducted, and gave two violin solos. Dr. Crooke accompanied. Among the many present were: Mrs. and Miss Julius, Mr. Justice, Mrs. and Miss Denniston, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. G. Rhodes and Mr. Clarke (England), Mrs. F. M. Wallace. Archer gave a very PLEASANT AFTERNOON TEA to a number of her friends on Tuesday at her residence, Fendalton. Mrs. Archer wore a pretty costume of dark bluish grey voile, finished with black, and soft white vest. Among the guests were: Mrs. Woodroffe, in navy blue costume and red hat; Mrs. Wigram, mourning costume; Mrs Cory-Thomas, pretty grey; Mrs. Ranald Macdonald, vieux rose frieze gown, black and white chiffon hat; Mrs.
E. C. J. Setvens, black coat and skirt, white lace vest, and pretty bonnet; Mrs. and Miss Denniston, Mrs. and Miss Tabart, Mrs. Ogle, Mrs. G. Gould, Mrs. and Miss Deans, Mrs. Mathias, Mrs. and Miss Inman, Mrs. Hanmer, Mrs. and Miss Neave, Mrs. Staveley, Mrs. Lance, Mrs. J. D. Hall. Mrs. Stringer, Mrs. and Miss Sccretan, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. J. C. Palmer, Missel Gerard, Newton, Helmore and Others. THE ANNUAL DANCE of Miss Calvert’s pupils and friends took place at Hobb’s buildings last week, and
passed off most successfully. Miss Calvert wore pale blue inerveilleux, trimmed with silver, white ehiffon fichu and bunch of pink roses; Mrs. Hobden, black silk under lace gown, and crimson flowers; Miss McGregor, white silk: Mi-s Vineent, cream nun’s veiling and satin blouse to match, crimson Howers on bodice: Miss Talbot, cream satin and chiffon; Miss Francis, white, relieved wit*> pink- silk; Miss Armitage, black velvet and lace and crimson flowers; Miss Sibbald, pretty cream muslin, relieved with heliotrope; Miss 1.. Holloway, black and white; Miss Andrews, very pretty white silk; Miss Kennett, buttercup silk; Miss D. Kennett, white silk; Miss Withell, dainty white muslin; and many others. Fox’s band supplied excellent music, extras being played by Misses Vincent. Talbot and Calvert. The supper tables were charmingly decorated, being a study in green and gold. Most of the flowers used were the trumpet narcissus.
Mrs. Andrew Anderson, "Merehison,” Gpawa, gave a number of young friends an opportunity to wish Miss Helen donald "good-bye” at an afternoon tea at her residence last week. Miss Macdonald, accompanied by Miss Mary iloare, leaves for England by the Gothic for two years' study. Many of the girls brought her some little parting gift. The Misses Anderson were most attentive to their guests, amongst whom were the Misses Burns (2), Wilding, DevenishMeares. Cook, Prins, Kitson. Banks. Mills and others.
Mr. G. G.. Mrs. and Mias Stead, Mrs. Joseph Palmer and Mr. G. Palmer returned to Christchurch on Saturday night from attending the wedding of Mr. Wilfrid Stead, eldest son of Mr. G. G. stead, and Miss Ruby Roberts, daughter of Mr. John Roberts of “Littlebourne,” Dunedin. The marriage excited a good deal <f interest in Christchurch, but the invitations only included relatives and a few intimated friends owing to a bereavement in the bride’s family. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfrid Stead are spending their honeymoon in the South, but. their future home will be at Macdonald Downs, Waikari, North Canterbury. DOLLY VALE.
