Dear Bee, October 15. On Tuesday evening, October- 6th. at Miss Brewer's annual children's dance, in the Assembly Rooms, there were about a hundred children, and it was a pretty sight to see their happy little faces and dainty frocks. They ranged from little mites of about 3 years and upwards. A large number of parents and friends were invited to assist Miss Brewer in entertaining her class. Amongst them I noticed Mesdames Blundell, Greenwood, Nixon (2), Kitehen. Powell, Barnicoat, Dodgshun, Cholmeley, Higgle. Bolton Izett, Hatriek, D’Arcy, Hughes, Johnston, Collier, Campbell. Hoult, Williamson, Foreman, Misses Anderson, Mason, Baker, Rawson, Christie, Izard, Duncan, Willis, Dodgshun, McDonnell, and Newcombe, Messrs Stedman, Pownall, Anderson, Brandon, L. Peake, Mountford. Bruce, R. Stevenson, Blair, Mackay, and Dr. Barnard. Amongst the children I noticed the little Misses Cholmeley (3), Hatriek, Doris Powell, Enid Herwood. Twogood. Collier, Greenwood, Bignail, Dodgshun, Baddeley, Keesing, Mason, Christie (2). Blundell. Barnicoat. Clapham, Lockett, Masters Kitchen, Mason. D’Arcy. L. Greenwood, Foreman. C. Nixon, E. Hoult, Gower, Chamberlain, Millward, Burnett and Newcombe. Miss Brewer wore a handsome costume of black silk, the corsage veiled with blaek Brussels net, pleated bolero, edged with white chiffon, handkerchief sleeves, trimmed with same; Mrs Izett, black satin skirt, heliotrope silk blouse, berthe of lace on corsage; Mrs Barnicoat, old geld brocade with lace; Mrs Blundell, pale green silk blouse with champagne lace collar, black satin skirt; Mrs Cholmeley, Oriental shaded brocade with fichu of real lace; Mrs H. Nixon, black sarin skirt, heliotrope silk bodiee with lacc and shoulder straps of silver; Mrs Dodgshun. blaek satin gown, relieved with white laee; Miss Christie, white silk; Miss Dodgshun, pale pink muslin with insertion and laee on corsage, skirt with trills; Miss O. Mason, black satin, veiled with black Brussels net; Miss McDonnell, white muslin frock w-ith bands of white satin ribbon; Miss Izard, cream silk, veiled with net, and lace trimmings.

On Thursday Mrs McLean gave a delightful musical evening, at which Mrs Rawson’s singing was very much enjoyed. Amongst those present were Mr •nd Mrs McLean, Mrs Palmer (Wellington), Mrs Fenwick, Mrs Rawson (Masterton', Mesdames Moss, Dyer, Cleghorn, Misses Izard, Baker, P. Jones, Chaytor (Blenheim), Judge Kettle, Messrs Wood, McLean, and Izard. The Misses Anderson gave a most enjoyable afternoon tea on Wednesday for their guest, Miss K. Mcßeth, of Christchurch, who is visiting her friends in Wanganui. The prizes for the guessing competitions were won by the Misses Campbell (Pa tea), Rawson and Newcombe. Mrs Anderson wore a black tucked silk voile skirt and a pretty heliotrope silk blouse with lace and insertion trimmings: Miss Anderson, white tucked silk frock, banded with insertion: her siste- wore a black silk skirt, smart silk blouse, trimmed with insertion and lace. Amongst the guests I noticed Mrs Brookfield, Misses Trainor, McDonnell. O. Meson, G. Mason, Inglis (Pahiatua), Christie, Izard, Mcßeth (Christchurch), Knapp. Jones, Rawson, Baker. Wray (TLuaru). Tennant (Marton). Millward (Wellington), Stuart (Wellington), M. Harrison. M. Baker, Good (Hawera). Duncan. Gilfillan (Auckland), Campbell. Newcombe. Dodgshun, Barnard-Brown, Richards. McNeill. Lewis. McLean, and a great many others. Miss Brewer’s annual ball was held in the Assembly Rooms on Friday evening, and was greatly enjoyed by those present. The floor was in perfect order, and a most tempting supper was laid downstairs. Amongst those present I noticed Mesdames Nixon and Chamberlain, Misses Brewer. McDonnell (2), Mason. Dodgshun. Gilfillan (Auckland). Clapham, Urquhart, Pawson, Messrs Brandon, Bruce, Anderson, Montford, Blair, Willis, Connor, Wood, L. Peake, Chamberlain. Stevenson and others. Owing no doubt to the delightful spring weather, eroquet and lawn tennis has begun very early this season. Small but very enjoyable parties were given by Mrs John Mason and Mrs McDonnell last week. A very large crowd of spectators assembled at the railway station on Monday night to ■welcome our victorious Garrison Band on their return from Timaru. Hearty cheers were given when the train came in, and speeches by Mr Hatriek (the Mavor) and Mr A. D. Willis, M.H.R. The last afternoon tea of the season of the Ladies’ Golf Club was held on Wednesday. The match resulted in a tie between Miss Jackson and Miss Newcombe; in the play-off Miss Jackson winning 3 down; Miss Newcombe 5 down. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Wickham. Amongst those on the links I noticed Mesdames Cleghorn, Brookfield, Dyer, Misses Worgan (2), Earle, Moore, Jackson, Newcombe. On Wednesday (14th), at the Balgowrie Golf Links, a match was played by the Men’s Club against a team from New Plymouth, resulting in a win for the local team. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies’ committee, and was much appreciated bv the players. HUI A.
